it is between A and B.
Others are discarded because 'such as' is correct when mentioning examples.

I'll pick B as it is better suits as a modifier for scientists.

"such as" cannot be right here. The X and Y here is "the growth rates of large modern reptiles" and "examinations of fossils of juvenile dinosaurs". Using "such as" makes this sentence unclear.

So, not A or B. E is wrong too, very awkward. So it is either C or D.
D is wrong because of the comma.
My pick is C. "Like" is correct here.

I will go with B. I think such as is correct as the author of the sentence is trying to give us an example of large modern reptile.
