(E) Based on such growth rates as those of large modern reptiles like

B for 2 reasons
1. Correct modifier " on the basis"
2. Use of "such as"

(E) Based on such growth rates as those of large modern reptiles like

"such as" cannot be right here. The X and Y here is "the growth rates of large modern reptiles" and "examinations of fossils of juvenile dinosaurs". Using "such as" makes this sentence unclear.

So, not A or B. E is wrong too, very awkward. So it is either C or D.
D is wrong because of the comma.
My pick is C. "Like" is correct here.

I think the use of such as is wrong; it's not giving an example. So, like is correct and in choice D the use of "those of" make the sentence logically compared.
