between is needed as we are comparing 2 orbits in an interval.

between(for comparing the orbiting of the comet) its( possessive form of Halley's comet)passes(singualr so for each orbit Halley comet passes)

So C should be it

"interval between its passes" sounds logical.

I think the between has nothin to do with the interval rather to do with the changes in orbit. Changes in orbit brings comparison into picture.

The change of orbit takes place during the interval between its passes

the interval lies BETWEEN the passes and the change of orbit happens DURING the interval..

Makes sense?
