Not sure how B is the OA?
C - to supplement Marilyn's income? We are talking about a child.

I would go with the original (A).

Thanks mbawaters for nice catch. Here is my take.

GMAT rule: During exam if a question referes a celebrity, please focus issue or problem at hand, never deviate focus imaging the celebrity. This was my mistake - I was fascinated by Marilyn Monroe name and I thought question was about Marilyn Monroe, but the sentence clearly makes "Marilyn Monroes", implies Marilyn Monroe family  . Therefore, requires "plural" pronoun referent .

a. her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement thier income ["Marilyn Monroes" require plural referent – eliminate it]
b. their life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement thier income[Hold it]
c. her life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement Marilyn's income["Marilyn Monroes" require plural referent – eliminate it]
d. her mother's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement their income["Marilyn Monroes" require plural referent – eliminate it]
e. the child's life with a couple who became foster parents to supplement the couple's income["Marilyn Monroes" require plural referent – eliminate it]
Answer: B a clear winner.
