Should be C.
The problem with D is that it tends to imply that "scientific research" is in demand rather than the Platinum.

platinum is compared with gold so like is the correct usage
demand in scientific research, platinum is correct usage here
and NOT
demand for scientific research, platinum is correct
C it is

I was in confusion between C & D.
But the difference between "in" & '"for" made me to choose C.
The answer C.
