'B' it is.
Between 'B' and 'E' go for 'B'.
Needless to say that we should use word 'firms' + an infinitive here. :-D

Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required of firms to survive in the electronics industry, an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand, such firms tend to be very large.

The correct idiom is "required to".

So we need not only a "to" but also something like "firm" which completes the latter part of the sentence "such firms tend to be very large."

SO B is the choice.

I looked erverywhere to find explanations about "required of" which sounded curiously to my ears... In the dictionnaries, I found only "required from"

has it the same meaning as "required from"?

Or is it a passive form, thus is it correct to say "...... required by firms"
