(A) to survive
(B) of firms to survive
(C) for surviving
(D) for survival
(E) for firms’ survival

"Such firms" need a mention of "firms" in the sentence. Only B has that.

Let's deconstruct the sentence :

1. "Because of the enormous research and development expenditures required to survive in the electronics industry" (an adverbial clause)

2. "an industry marked by rapid innovation and volatile demand"(appositive for electronics industry)

3. "such (a modifier/qualifier for "firms", the subject of the sentence) firms tend to be very large".

Does the subject - "such firms" - refer to any firms mentioned before ? No, so we need to include that.

(B) is the answer.

Thats the only reason. This must be B.

OK, but what if 'such' is not used, then what will be the correct answer?

A – last part of the sentence refers to a firms. We need to find a sentence where “firms” is clearly stated. Eliminate
B – Keep
C – No reference to firms. Eliminate
D – same as C
E – "firms' survival" is possesive and "such firms" can't refer back to it.
