Young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits caused by the desire to be as thin as possible.
(A) Young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits caused by the desire to be as thin as possible.
(B) Good eating habits sometimes fail to be maintained by young female ballet dancers and gymnasts caused by desiring to be as thin as possible.
(C) Because they desire to be as thin as possible, good eating habits are sometimes not maintained by young female ballet dancers and gymnasts.
(D) Because they desire to be as thin as possible, young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits.
(E) Young female ballet dancers and gymnasts sometimes fail to maintain good eating habits because they desire to be as thin as possible
I always got these type of qs wrong can some one explain?

I always got these type of qs wrong can some one explain? 1. A means that : the desire (to be as thin as possible) causes the habits, making A sound awkard, A out 2. "to be maintained" wordy, and "desiring" should be "the desire", anyway B out immediately 3. C means that "habits" desire to be as thin as possible, awkard, C out 4. "they" in E can refer to both "habits" and "dancers and gymnasts", E out D remains

I think E should be right ...
as Subject (Young female ballet dancers and gymnasts ) comes in first part of the sentence ..

You probably might be thinking that "they" appears in all the choices and probably is non controversial. What is the source of this Q?

Preposing the reason will make the sentence more clear and logic , because it is in accordance with the event-sequence . So D is the best .

I had D, but I changed my answer to A. I felt "they" was just too ambiguous, even A doesn't really sound the best either.
