Before leaving home for the town of Madison, Pete checks a map which shows that Madison is 5 inches from his current location, Gardensquare. Pete arrives in Madison 2.5 hours later and drove at an average speed of 60 miles per hour. At what scale, in inches per mile, is the map drawn?

A. \(\frac{1}{3}\)

B. \(\frac{1}{30}\)

C. \(\frac{1}{10}\)

D. 2

E. 30

Pete covered 2.5*60=150 miles which correspond to 5 inches on the map --> scale in inches per mile is 5/150=1/30.

5 inches is 2.5 hours so it means that 1 inch is 0.5 hours, i.e. 30 minutes In one hours at 60 mph, he will have driven 60 miles so in 30 minutes it is 30 miles.

In other words

at 1 inch corresponds 30 minutes at 30 minutes corresponds 30 miles

so at 1 inch corresponds 30 miles. The scale is draw 1/30

Hope it's clear

I go that the 1 inch = 30 miles But how does that mean the scale is drawn at 1/30 . I just don't understand the words actually. Can anybody explain it to me. _________________

The total distance is 150 miles. This corresponds to 5 inches. So we can draw the ratio 150 miles/5 inches. Now we are asked for inches/1 miles So, we can establish the following relationship 150 miles/5 inches = 1 miles/x inches. x inches = 5/150 = 1/30. Answer choice B.
