Agree with D.
C changes the meaning of the original sentence.

Between C and D
C says "learned to synthesize the growth hormone"
D says "learning to make a synthetic growth hormone"
I opt for C as it is concise and As Professor rightly said sequence of tenses.

It should be C.
Before scientist learned how to synthesize the growth hormone, it had to be painstakingly removed in small amounts from the pituitary glands of human cadavers.
In C 'it' cleary refers to 'growth harmone' and tense usage is also correct.
In D 'it' refers to 'synthetic growth hormone' rather than 'growth harmone'.
Before learning how to make a synthetic growth hormone, scientists had to remove it painstakingly in small amounts from the pituitary glands of human cadavers.
Scientist can remove 'growth hormone' and not' synthetic growth hormone' from the pituitary glands of human cadavers.
So IMO answer should be C.

Agree with Brajesh's explanation. C should be it.
Is the questions correct? C should probably have "scientists"

It's "C". When two actions occur in the past, the first action has to be in past perfect and the latter action has to be in past tense. Only "C" follows the convention.
"D" and "E" are in passive voice and so "C" is the clear winner, and I am overlooking other faults with "D" and "E".
