A very nice question on pronouns. C wins. All other options have synthetic hormone as the referent for "it". Synthetic hormones cannot be removed from human cadavers.

B. scientists had learned about making a synthetic growth hormone, they had to remove it painstakingly
C. scientists learned how to synthesize the growth hormone, it had to be painstakingly removed
D. learning how to make a synthetic growth hormone, scientists had to remove it painstakingly
E. Learning how to synthesize the growth hormone, it have to be painstakingly removed by scientists

Agreed. I dismissed C because it didn't include the plural form of the subject

C

ABD out, because making a synthetic hormone is redundant given that synthetic already encapsulates the meaning of being made.
E is out because of SVA "it" needs "has".
