Between (B) and (C), I lean toward (C).
(A) No main subject/verb
(B) Some might argue that scientists are not in small amounts nor from the glands.
(D) "synthesize the growth hormone" is better
(E) it sounds like "it" learns how to synthesize the hormone.

D it is.
Making a synthetic growth hormone is different from synthesizing a growth hormone. C changes the meaning of the sentence.
Scientists are learning to make somthing....they are not learning to syntehsize!

To synthesize is the same as to make.
OA is C.

I would go for C,
it refers to hormone in a correct way.

(D) learning how to make a synthetic growth horomone, scientists had to remove it painstakingly The problem with D is "painstakingly" incorrectly placed. "Painstakingly" is an adverb and should be placed immediately before the verb it modiesfies, which is "remove."
