its A clearly.
An infinitive is required and A provides that by using 'to guide'

i pick A here. the purpose of her return to maryland is to guide others. here infinitive is required to clarify the idea of purpose of her return. hence it is A

Expert's post
Before the Civil War, Harriet Tubman, herself an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland to guide other slaves along the Underground Railroad to freedom.

(A) herself an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland to guide

'herself' correctly signifies the use of a indicative reflexive pronoun. 'To guide' shows the reason why she returned. We want the infinitive because their is the implicit 'in order to do': she returned (in order) to guide.

(B) being an escaped slave herself, returned again and again to Maryland so as to guide

Being is wordy.

(C) an escaped slave herself, returned again and again to Maryland for guiding

'For guiding' is incorrect.

(D) herself as an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland so as to be the guide of

'Herself as an' is the incorrect use of the indicative pronoun...'so as to be...' is wordy.

(E) who had been herself as an escaped slave, returned again and again to Maryland for the guiding of

'herself as an'...'for the guiding of'... this answer is a wordy mess :).
