GMAT Tests User
My last 3 MGMAT tests have been as follows...

40Q 33V 600
45Q 28V 600
40Q 35V 620

As you can see my Q score is stuck between 40-45, but I'd like my V score to move into the range of 35-40 more consistently. 45 is my highest Q and 35 is my highest V. I take the test for the first time in 2 weeks (February 4). I will be taking it again within a month or so in case i don't get in the 700 range. My goal for my first try at the GMAT is 650+. What is the best way to go about improving my Verbal score? I have all the MGMAT strategy books.

Main idea, analyze arg structure, modifiers and weaken conclusion are the concepts that I missed the most. Any advice would help. Thanks.

Hi

Your plan sounds like a practical one! MGMAT guides are the bedrock to the verbal section. And signing up for the test twice is a great contingency plan.

One omission I noticed is Official Prep material. MGMAT has great questions, but nothing compare to the Official Guide 12th edition and the GMATPrep test, downloadable on mba.com.

I think a healthy interchange between problem sets/practice tests (official material) and concept review (MGMAT) practice question sets from the official material. You should focus on the areas in which you still struggle.

A good way to do so is by revisiting questions you missed. For example, if it’s a main idea question you missed – as you reference in your post – think about the reasoning you used. Why wasn’t that reasoning valid? What was the reasoning behind the correct answer.

For instance, in main idea questions you may be picking answer choices that are mostly right, but contain a word or two that is not supported by the passage. If you can identify such faulty reasoning, you will be able to improve quickly.

With main idea questions a helpful strategy is answering the question in your own words. A great source of such strategies and fundamentals – esp. if you are a video learner – is Magoosh.com.

Magoosh.com offers hundreds of practice lessons, which cover concepts on the GMAT, and hundreds of practice questions, from easy to super hard, covering these concepts.

Here’s a little sample:

General CR Strategy

Let me know if you have any questions!
