Betting on sports, even for small stakes among friends, is a form of gambling. Therefore, no police officer should ever bet on sports. Which of the following, if true, most strengthens the conclusion that no police officer should ever bet on sports? a) Gambling is illegal in many states and countries. b)Some people who bet on sports are convicted criminals. c)People who bet on sports sometimes can ill afford to lose the amounts they wager. d)No police officer should ever gamble. e)Many philosophers consider gambling to be immoral. can please some explain this, i got E,? i will post the OA later on. thanks

thanks (a)-It says gambling is illegal in many states and countries but it did not say every state and/or country. It could be (a) because of the illegality (unauthorized or prohibited by a code of official or accepted rules ) of gambling. (b)-It does not say all people that bet on sports are convicted criminals. (c)- I do not see how not being able to afford to lose your wager would be a reason for police officers not to bet on sports. If you are betting on sports then you risk losing your money. (d)-I think this answer is correct because the conclusion states no police should ever bet on sports. And the answer for (d) says no police officer should gamble. It did not say you should not gamble just on sports but it said no gambling.[/b] (e)-I would not chose (e) because it does not matter what philosophers say. Gambling could be morally wrong but it would not support the argument that police officers should not bet on sports.

IMO D, only D connect the gap between the gamble with police official and betting on sports. Choice E is partly out of scope. D is the best answer choice among all slightly strengthen ones.

I guess this is an example of a GMAT critical reasoning type in which the OA is so obvious you think the GMAT is fooling you.
