Responding to a pm:

A couple of things here:

1. Usage of 'as many as' or 'as much as'

From the way we use 'as many as', it is clear that the answer must be (E).
You can eat as many pies as you like. (After the second 'as' you don't repeat the word 'pies')
This year, she will not earn as much money as she did last year. (you don't refer to money again after the second as)

Similarly: there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as in large cities.

2. In options C and D, the use of the word 'those' is incorrect.
'those' refers to people but you are not comparing people. You are comparing the number of people.

Take an example: People of Michigan are friendlier than people of state X.
Here you are comparing people.

You can also write this as: People of Michigan are friendlier than those of state X.
Here, the use of those is correct.

C seems like the best option for me, although D is also a good contender.

A. people being compared to large cities-incorrect
B. people being living as the large cities-incorrect
C. compared living style and not the number, changing the required comparison.
Between D&E I choose E because it is more concise.
OA Please.

A. there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as Comparison is supposed to be made between people who lived in suburbs and people who lived in large cities. Hence incorrect
B. there was as many people living in the suburbs as the. Our subject is "many people" which is plural. Hence "was" is incorrect
C. as many people lived in the suburbs as those who lived in Correct Answer(IMO) because i) on both sides of as, clauses are being compared. ii) Comparison is logical. #people who lived in suburbs is being compared to # of people who lived in large cities
D. as many people lived in the suburbs as those in Wrong comparsion. We are comparing the # of people who lived in large cities, not with the # of people in large cities. Hence incorrect
E. as many people lived in the suburbs as in Wrong comparison. Hence incorrect.

Whats the OA and the source?
By the way D seems a nice contender and I wont mind if I lose to D. If going with the logic, then C is absloutely correct but somehow each question of GMAT surprises me.

so that by 1938 there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as large cities.

A. there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as - should be there were as many people who lived in the suburbs as in
B. there was as many people living in the suburbs as the - should be there was as many people living in the suburbs as in the

C. as many people lived in the suburbs as those who lived in
D. as many people lived in the suburbs as those in
E. as many people lived in the suburbs as in

C, D, and E are all grammatically correct: as many people lived in the suburbs as (those (who lived) in. The part in brackets is understood, and does not add or subtract the meaning of the sentence.
So, by the criterion of concision, (E) is the most succinct.

Ans E. correct comparison between suburbs and cities. 'in' at the end of the option helps it to be correct.

In a way this question looks similar to "According to public health officials, in 1998 Massachusetts became...".
However, OA is neither
[Reveal] Spoiler:
C
nor
[Reveal] Spoiler:
D
.
[Reveal] Spoiler:
E
is the correct response.
Besides concision, can anyone explain, using structural analysis, why others are wrong? Lets restrict to C, D, and E.

Hi,

I think its between D and E. I will go with D as the word those makes a comparison b/w people living in city and suburbs.

If i am not wrong this is an elliptical construction.
Karishma has made an excellent poitn that we dont repeat the what we intend to compare in "as many as" and " as much as"

This is a really stalking difference between other comparison question and comparison question which has "as many as" and " as much as"

There is an example in OG 13 same type page num 697 Q no. 139[quote][/quote]
