Bias against finance? [#permalink] New post 29 Aug 2011, 13:36
Hey Alex,

Quick question on Adcoms' perceptions of finance candidates. I've been reading on various threads (here and elsewhere) that it's getting more and more difficult for hardcore financial folks (i.e. IB/PE with post-MBA goals of returning to finance) to get into top MBA programs. This makes sense to me given the recent downturn.

I'm wondering what the MBA perceptions are of people not in finance who want to break into it. I'm speaking specifically of management consultants and people in the industry who want to go into portfolio management, PE, VC, etc. Do you suspect that they're looked at in the same way, or would their background change perceptions a little?

The main reason they're cutting down on finance folks is because they're trying to cut down on those going into finance post-MBA. So not sure why you'd think it would be different for a PE wannabe with no finance experience (in fact, that would be worse).

Ah, what about more adjacent industries (e.g. financial consultants doing internal strategy at banks and whatnot)? I wonder if that's treated the same as hard-core finance like PE.
