After watching this forum for a bit, I have decided to make an account as I finally feel I have something worth asking.
I'll just get straight to the point. This past Tuesday I was sitting in the library when my phone starts vibrating. I take a look only to find a really random number calling me. It was a 202 area code (NY), with more than the 7 regular digits (an extension). I ended up ignoring it and going back to work. A few minutes later I see that I have received a voicemail from this number, I then check it immediately.
The voicemail is from a recruiter in NYC at a big four firm. She explains how she became familiar with my name, etc. and would like me to call her back (this is at around 6:30pm). So i immediately leave the library and call her back, I couldn't get a hold of her so I leave a voicemail. I don't hear from her the next day, so I call her back and leave another voicemail at around 3:30 pm.
So today, i still hadn't heard back from her. I decide to send her an email at around 4:00 explaining how I know she is extremely busy and I was just curious as to what would be an optimal time for me to call her. Well she didn't respond to the email today (it's around 12 am).
I'd like to call her tomorrow morning to see if I can possibly get a hold of her. I don't want to appear overly obnoxious, but I do want to show persistence and interest. This would seriously be the opportunity of a lifetime for my professional career. I am extremely passionate about working for this firm and I want her to know that.
I feel she wouldn't have called me and left a message if she was interested in me? I am somewhat perplexed at the moment. What do you guys/girls think of my situation? Am I approaching this correctly? Any advice/opinions/input would be appreciated. Thanks

I am assuming that you are a student. Did you apply for a position at this Big 4 firm? If not, none of this quite make any sense to me. If you already left her few messages and even sent her an email message, I would advise you to stop calling her. At this point, it's not "interest" or "passion" that you are showing her. Further phone calls or emails might actually work against you. If she isn't returning your messages or calls, I am assuming that there's a reason. Some recruiters are really good at returning messages right away and expect applicants to do the same while others... well let's just say there are few people who are not as good.

Sorry for the lack of details regarding myself. Yes, I am a senior applying for a summer internship in 2010. I am just perplexed as to why she would reach out to me and then not respond when I follow up. I'm really hoping she's just busy at work.

Let's just hope that she hasn't been to work few days due to personal reasons or something. But don't keep on contacting her. It can backfire. If you are anxious, I would also try to contact your career management service at school (assuming that's how you applied to this position in the first place) and ask their assistance. They usually know what to do, or who to contact.

Hi, I currently work for a Big 4 accounting firm and i agree with nink, stop calling. Don't stress too much, some recruiters just take a long time to get back to you. It was a 3-4 month process for me to get hired. After a couple of weeks it might be ok to check back in via email. Also, just as an FYI, if you want to work for a Big 4 firm you should be aware that there are a lot of hours involved (more than they tell you in the interview process). There is also a potential to be a lot of travel (more than they tell you in the interview process). It is a good start to a career, but there are many trade-offs.
