You can dismiss B, C and D easily. The answer is between A and E. The answer must be A.

we are talking about many substances that tell...

so A & B are the only choices

A is || whil b is not.. A it is.

(A) Best Choice. Maintains correct S-V agreement and parallelism
(B) 'which time they should become active' sounds awkward
(C) 'tells' Incorrect S-V
(D) 'tells' Incorrect S-V
(E) Doesn't maintain parallelism

(B) tell individual genes both at which time they should become active or should remain
(C) tells individual genes both when to become active or remain
(D) tells individual genes both when to become active or when to remain
(E) will tell an individual gene both about when it should become active and remain

1.In ETS we use"both....and..." not "both......or...." so delete B,C,D
2. In choice C,D "tell" must be pl. verb which modify "the substances"
3.Biologists believe that they have found ---present perfect. but in choic D "will tell an individual"--future so it is not parallel tense, thus making sentence awkward.
