B, C and D can be eliminated since the usage of or with both is wrong - between A and D, A seems the most appropriate - what is the OA??

this is A..because here what we have is one of the substances THAT..the restrictive clause "that" refers to the closest noun to it and in this case its substances..so therefore we need "tell"..

A is also parallel..

"substances that....tell" for agreement. Eliminate C,D
B and E have issues where "it" and "they" can refer to either "subtances" or "genes"

A here as it has the correct S-V agreement, idomatic expression and parallel structure.
Subject is substances and that refers to it so the verb should be plural.
Idiom: both x and y.
llism: .....................become and ............remain.

A,B- Out (Sub-Verb Agreement Wrong) one of the substances ...tell
C,D out .. both..or wrong construction

E -- left.. E sounds not great!!! :? ... Am I missing something?
But I have to pick one of them.. .... that is E.

suresh,
the word "substances" is followed immediately by "that" which means the modifying phrase correctly modifies substances.
