IMO C.

(A) tell individual genes both when to become active and when to remain
(B) tell individual genes both at which time they should become active or should remain
(C) tells individual genes both when to become active or remain - Correct
(D) tells individual genes both when to become active or when to remain - redundunt
(E) will tell an individual gene both about when it should become active and remain - extreme

C is incorrect because you cant use "both". Become active or remain quiet is one option. right?

IMO D...since "one of the" is collective subject and therefore it should use tells instead of tell, also it maintain ||ism. what is the OA of this?

Tricky Q.

I was about to choose D when I noticed "or" in D which is wrong
We should use "and" when we are talking about "both".

C is wrong for the same reason (+ violating parallelism)
B is wrong for the same reason as well ( + being awkward)

This leaves us to choose between A & E.

E is wrong because it violates parallelism

So A should be the correct answer by POE.

My take-

Both X and Y is idiomatic ; X and Y must be parallel

--Eliminate B , C and D

In E, when it should become active AND remain are no way parallel

Hence , A

If you are not an idiom lover, Use subject verb agreement and come to options starting with "Tell" and look for parallelsim..your hunt must end in A or your hunting rules are doubtful
