BioTech to MBA -- Please evaluate my profile [#permalink] New post 25 Apr 2010, 14:51
Hi Alex.

Would you please provide a brief evaluation with regards my profile:

Brief Stats:
Nationality: Indian Female
Age: 25, will be 26 at matriculation.
GMAT: 720
GPA:
Undergraduate GPA: 3.7 (Bachelor of Pharmacy from a top Indian University)
Graduate GPA: 3.45 (MS in Biotechnology from a mid-tier University)
Work Experience:
I am currently a Research Associate/Scientist at a pharmaceuticals company. By the time I apply in Round 2 (for most schools, the deadline should be around early Jan of next year), I would have had exactly 2 years of full time work experience (and over 2.5 years by the time I graduate). Additionally, I have 1 year of academic experience (research assistant to a professor in a lab) and 3 summer internships during my undergraduate studies.

Growth in my current job has been significant, and I should have plenty to talk about in my applications. Consequently, my letters of recommendation should be pretty strong (these recs shall be coming from individuals at the Director Level in my company).

Extracurriculars: Mediocre.

Post MBA choice: Strategy Consulting or Business Development in the Biotech/Health Care space

My questions/concerns:
- I have been told that my background is fairly unique compared to other applicants - what would be your thoughts on this point?
- How do adcom's view academic experience/summer internships - will this count towards the number of years of full time work experience, or, will they only consider the two full time years as my actual work experience? If the latter, then do you think it would be advisable to wait another year to apply (although waiting another full year would be a pretty big disappointment as I am really prepared to go for the MBA)?
- Finally, could you please suggest a list of target and reach schools that I should be considering? Two of the top programs that I am very interested in are Yale SOM and Tuck - how would you rate my chances in these two schools?

Thanks very much for your help - I am really looking forward to your guidance.

Regards.

I wouldn't say you're unique as there are enough healthcare/biotech folks applying to b-schools.

In any case, schools don't count internships as full-time experience. It's your post-college full-time experience that matters. In any case, if you're ready to apply this year, then go for it - the worst that can happen is that you get a chance to reapply next year (and no, your chances aren't lessened as a reapplicant, since reapplicants make up a good chunk of the applicant pool).

If you're looking at biotech/healthcare, then add Duke, Haas and UCLA to that list -- Duke being very strong in healthcare, and Haas/UCLA being in California where there is a lot of biotech/healthcare companies in the region.
