Black Americans are, on the whole, about twice as likely as [#permalink]

19. Black Americans are, on the whole, about twice as likely as White Americans to develop high blood pressure. This likelihood also holds for westernized Black Africans when compared to White Africans.
Researchers have hypothesized that this predisposition in westernized Blacks may reflect an interaction between western high-salt diets and genes that adapted to an environmental scarcity of salt.
Which of the following statements about present-day, westernized Black Africans, if true, would most tend to confirm the researchersтАЩ hypothesis?
(A) The blood pressures of those descended from peoples situated throughout their history in Senegal and Gambia, where salt was always available, are low.
(B) The unusually high salt consumption in certain areas of Africa represents a serious health problem.
(C) Because of their blood pressure levels, most White Africans have markedly decreased their salt consumption.
(D) Blood pressures are low among the Yoruba, who, throughout their history, have been situated far inland from sources of sea salt and far south of Saharan salt mines.
(E) No significant differences in salt metabolism have been found between those people who have had salt available throughout their history and those who have not.

I go for (A).
(A) will provide a good support that the genes are the problem.

D.
example endorses research fininds that scarcity of salt may be correlated to high blood pressure.

A it is for me.
D doesn't seem right - the hypothesis is that *westernized* Black Africans are susceptible to low blood pressure because of the high-salt diet in the west and their own genes being adapted to low salt conditions. If Yoruba already have scarcity of salt, then they shouldn't have low blood pressure!

For me the argument use a cause/effect reasoning.
High salt diets along with genes adapted to scarcity of salt are the cause for high blood pressure. We need evidence to support this reaosning. A seems to be the best choice. Those guys from Africa have low blood pressure because of their genes.
B is out of scope.
C is out of scope.
D is not a good choice. What about if the Yoruba don't eat that salt?
E is irrelevant

Okay,
We need to infer an assumption which supports the claim "that this predisposition in westernized Blacks may reflect an interaction between western high-salt diets and genes that adapted to an environmental scarcity of salt."
a)
b) Out of scope
c) Out of scope
d) Most people would pick this. However, this only supports part of the conclusion that the Yoruba has a low salt diet. However, we cannot assume that the Yoruba's genes have adapted to the scarcity of salt.
e) Out of scope
I believe A is the correct answer. If blood pressures of those who descended from a group of people acustomed to consuming high amounts of salt is LOW, then their genese have adapted.
