my answer would be 80.

solution

let x be the cost price. so the profit percent is x too

Selling price = x + (x*x)/100
144 = x+ x*x/100

x2+100x-14400 =0
x =-180 or x= 80

So CP =80.

Cost (C) + profit (P) = Sell-Price (S)

%gain = ( P/C ) * 100 = C

Profit = C ^ 2 / 100

C + C^2 /100 = 144
C^2 + 100C - 14400 = 0
(C+180)(C-80) = 0
C = 80

Please post the official answer.
