issue here is placement of correct modifiers:
1.) From the beginning of the sentence, by studying linguistics - who is studying - researchers are studying, hence need the noun next to the phrase.
2.) End of the sentence -similarities are found in what, in languages, hence need languages to modify similarities.
Hence "A" does the placement correctly.

Modifier.

By studying linguistics must be followed by researchers.

None of the other choices can actually perform the studying.
