issue here is placement of correct modifiers:
1.) From the beginning of the sentence, by studying linguistics - who is studying - researchers are studying, hence need the noun next to the phrase.
2.) End of the sentence -similarities are found in what, in languages, hence need languages to modify similarities.
Hence "A" does the placement correctly.

A Modifier. By studying linguistics must be followed by researchers. None of the other choices can actually perform the studying.
