I'm really just curious if this is some hidden "essential" for an application. The schools all say they really dont matter - any thoughts?

It all depends on the school. For example, Wharton and Harvard have both come out and said "A school visit has ZERO impact on your application".

Other schools such as Tuck and Duke don't care so much about visiting the school, but they do put a lot of emphasis on coming to campus to interview (both schools interview all applicants). Duke basically says "Unless you live on the west coast, you better come and interview".

That said, if you are an international applicant, the expectation to come and visit or even do an on-site interview is pretty much non-existent. Tuck has a space in their app were you can explain why you didn't come and interview on campus. Living overseas is a more than adequate excuse.

for those schools that do care if you come and visit (Ross comes to mind), I think the closer you are to the school, the worse it looks if you don't come and visit.

Haas' official stance is that your visit will not impact your application. BUT, you do have to demonstrate (in a short essay) what steps you took to learn about our school. Since the Haas culture is so important to all the students here, we want to make sure that you know what the culture is like and whether you will fit in with that culture. Plus, the students here are uber-friendly and you can learn a lot of tips for your applications by talking to many of us. :)

2010 Applicants? [#permalink] New post 30 Apr 2009, 06:11
This may be a little early in the game, but are there any 2010 applicants out there? Doesn't matter what stats or school. I thought it would be nice to start up the 2010 community and get to know some names. Thanks.

Applying this fall as well! Pleasure to meet you all. Perhaps we should start a profile thread for Fall 2010 applicants...

I couldn't more strongly recommend visiting the schools. I visited every school I applied to, which had a huge impact on my perception of those schools. Gave me a much better sense for which schools I preferred and helped tremendously when writing application essays. Also gives you a great opportunity to meet fellow applicants, which can be helpful as you navigate the application process. I visited during the fall and took time off from work to do so. If I had to do it over again, I'd visit much earlier - ideally during the summer.

Why ideally during the summer? I was under the impression this wasn't a good idea because campus was dead?

I think the reason for visiting in the summer is probably because you will be super busy come fall, plus you will want things that you can add to your essays. If you could visit places now, that's probably ideal.

I'm applying in the fall too :-D

I wrote that too quickly. Ideally you'd do this during the spring (not summer), as in now. Problem is that some schools have already finished classes and others are soon to be done. If you're considering visiting before the fall, I'd get on that right away. Visiting classes and talking to students were valuable experiences, and yes, you won't be able to do that during the summer. If you do this during the fall, as I did, you'll have to schedule visits ASAP after classes start to have enough time to visit before submitting your apps. That's a bit tough if you don't live near the schools; for me, it meant taking off a lot of time from work. My schedule became so crunched that in some cases I visited just a few days before apps were due. In hindsight, I wish I had visited much earlier.

I have already visited Columbia 2 times. One through their host program and sitting in on classes. Can't tell you how nice it was to just be in that environment again. Very nostalgic : ). I'm also plannning on attending an information session on May 14th.

Toss my name in the hat for class of 2012. I am currently studying for the GMAT - looking to apply to three schools in Round 1 this Fall, two or three in Round 2.

These boards have been great - especially for those of us in non-MBA intensive industries. Keep up the great work, Mods!

Mee too for fall 2010.

Guys, Anyone visited or planning to visit IESE/ESADE? I am looking to visit these schools in july-Aug. Is it a good time? Also, is it worth going there right from India?
