Nope, I never received an 'interview complete' email or status change. My interview specifics did disappear, however. I was giving them 10 days before I called to see what was going on. My admittance came on the 8th day.

Two links I thought I'd share with everyone:

CBS Events Calendar -- This should give you a really good idea of the kind of events, recruiters, and speakers that come through campus all the time. Jamie Dimon (CEO of JPMorgan Chase) came at the beginning of October. Craig Newmark (Founder of Craigslist) came a few days ago.

to all those who are accepted reapps,
i was recently dinged off the early decision waitlist. since i'm planning on re-apping, i'm wondering if you guys have any tips/advice?

i will retake my gmat, but i'm not sure how i can really substantially improve the other areas of my app. i have a feeling i was dinged for my low gpa. i had a 710 gmat (twice) but think i can improve to at least a 730.

my main concern is the essay. they say restate my goals, but how much did you guys reuse from original essay #1 or did you completely rewrite the entire thing? what kind of additional insights did you add? the additional essay is really stumping me at this point.

thanks!

My re-app strategy:

* My goals were left the same
* My GMAT/GPA were left the same
* I took some additional quantitative coursework to shore up that part of my background
* I showed a lot of achievements at work over the last year and went into them in the essay
* I took on some extra-curriculars over the last year and highlighted in the essay those as well
* I continued to reach out to members of the CBS community and mentioned those interactions, and also how/why they led me to realize that CBS is the perfect program for me

The re-app essay is difficult because you have 750 words to re-state your goals, cover what's changed, and why you want to go to CBS. You have to be succinct and present the right content with your limited space.

I submitted my app within the first week they were accepting them in August. I was interviewed last year in Regular Decision, and this year my interview was waived and I was admitted in early October.

Had my interview yesterday. The whole process (of scheduling my interview and the interview questions) was consistent with what others have reported.

A brief highlight:
I looked up the names of the three alumni (on google) that the interviewer search returned, and selected one based on my preference.
I contacted him, and he responded within minutes. We agreed on time and scheduled that we have the interview over dinner.
My interview questions:
Tell me about yourself and walk me through your resume.(I used this opportunity to tell him a story on my background up to present).
Why an MBA and why CBS?
Why spend two years on MBA?
Why not part-time MBA at a local college?
Tell me about an ethical dilemma that you have experienced or witnessed?
What other schools have you have applied to?
What is your plan in case you don't get into any of the schools that you have applied to?
How does location factor into your decision in choosing the schools that you applied to?
Then he allowed me to ask all the questions that I had for him.

Overall, the interview was conversational and smooth. Though I only got through a third of my dinner since i did most of the talking while he went through his appetizer and main course :-D

FYI - i submitted for RD in mid Nov, got interview invite 6th of Jan.

Hey Praz, Eminent!

I know you guys have already been accepted to CBS and you guys have been really helpful on this thread. I was wondering could either of you share your interview insights? Mine is coming up this Saturday and I might be starting to panic!!!

I have the basics - know my application, CBS...but any other questions that slightly surprised you?

Thank you so much for your help!

Wish me luck!

Hey -- You're welcome.

I would say that you should know your goals, why Columbia, why now, and a pretty detailed walk through of your resume. You should also be ready to spend a bit of time selling your work experience and what you've learned from it.

Another question to prepare for is the ethical dilemma question. This has been a mainstay at CBS over the past few years (although I'm not 100% sure if they're using it this year) -- It goes something like "Tell me about an ethical dilemma that you have faced? How did you handle it?". Please note that dilemmas need to have no black and whit answers... they have to be thought-provoking and you have to walk the interviewer through your decision making process.

Hope that was helpful.

Does anybody know if it is possible to choose the interviewer from different geographical locations? When/if the interview notification comes, I may be in Buenos Aires, or I may be in New York. I worry about my travel plans and my agenda.

Also, does anybody know what is the commitment deposit amount for RD? (I know its 6k for ED).

I can tell you about how I tried to find interviewers in different states around the US. I was in your same boat and was unsure about my travel plans. I did my first search query and the system outputted names of alumni. I did a second search query for a totally different location and more names were added to the list but the old names weren't deleted. I continued to search for alumni in potential places I would be in the next few weeks. After the system gave me 9 names in various locations, it wouldn't add additional names, even if I gave it a totally different location. So, when you do your search query for alumni, be aware that the system will only show 9 names and it won't delete the names that it's already shown you (even if you're not interested in them). Does that make sense? Luckily, things worked out for me so that I didn't have to call admissions office and ask them to reset my alumni searches.

Don't know about commitment deposit for RD.

I honestly doubt there is any transparent method to the madness. Nothing we're going to be able to perceive from the outside, anyway, with GMAT Club as a limited sample size.

For example, I have a high GMAT score, am a very non-traditional applicant, live in NYC, am female, have visited Columbia a couple of times, and attended prestigious undergrad. I even applied a couple of days early and went "Under Review" on 1/8. Any of those things, you might conjecture, could kick me to the front of the queue or into a certain bucket or however you want to phrase it. Fact is, I haven't heard a peep in weeks. So maybe that's it -- I'm not getting in at all, they've already made up their minds, they just want to torture me a while longer. Or maybe I am not thinking creatively enough and there is some other method of differentiation. Or maybe they've read my app and are arguing about it; or maybe they tossed it in the loo; or maybe someone spilled coffee on it and they have to reprint; or maybe they found out about that time I pocketed a scented bath bead from Pier 1 Imports when I was six; or maybe (probably!) there are already too many scifi nerds at Columbia and they just don't need another one; or maybe; or maybe; or maybe.

As long as it is fun to conjecture, carry on. But as soon as you start to find yourself freaking out, remember: this ish is crazy. There may be no rhyme or reason. There is a definite date by which we will all know. Until then: we wait.

Be easy.

I wouldn't worry yet, Reality. My application went under review around 1/8 and I didn't get an invite until today. Besides which, I would honestly be willing to bet that there are still invites going out even for people who applied a little earlier than I did.

How much is Columbia's security deposit? My status went to "Interview Complete" yesterday so I am hoping to hear yes or no from Columbia in the next couple weeks. I understand Columbia only gives you 2-3 weeks to accept. Do people pay Columbia's security deposit and then wait to hear from other schools? Is this common? I won't hear from Sloan until 4/5.

Haha, Mertonman, we had the exact same thought. I still love Columbia's program, but I feel it's acting like the greasy used car salesman of MBA admissions.

First the ED structure in order to keep you from other schools. Then asking about my other schools in the interview. Now making you sweat with a tiny decision window.

Is there any evidence that suggests a correlation between the time taken to render a decision and the outcome of said decision? I would expect the answer to be no, and here's why. First, if the ADCOM reviews applications in the order received, then it would stand to reason that response time would be greatly impacted by applicant volume during the period in which an application was submitted. If you apply during a period with low applicant volume, you would likely receive a decision much faster than somebody applying during a period of high applicant volume. Second, the ADCOM provides both positive and negative feedback throughout the year. Wouldn't it be illogical to assume silence and negative feedback are one and the same? If the ADCOM had made a negative decision, it would immediately alert you. Lastly, rolling admissions puts the ADCOM at a disadvantage as it tries to form a well rounded class. A school that uses application rounds allows its ADCOM to compare each individual applicant to the entire pool of applicants from that round. Especially early in the admissions process, rolling admissions essentially forces the ADCOM to evaluate each individual as an individual. Wouldn't Columbia's ADCOM want to, for example, compare an applicant from a non-profit background to other applicants from non-profit backgrounds before rendering a decision? Consequently, I believe that some decisions are delayed only because the ADCOM does not have a sufficient peer group to which an applicant can be compared. Just my two cents. I would be curious to hear your responses.

Apparently those that applied at or right after the review period are still in the running. I applied on 1/6 and received an interview invitation last night (around 7:30pm EST oddly enough). I had pretty much written Columbia off as a ding, but there is still hope. Here's my profile:

M / 25 / White / 3.6 / 710 / 2 yrs IB M&A & 2 yrs PE / Strong ECs

Good luck to all.

I really feel for you guys with some of these 3 to 5 week waits after interviews. It's been 9 days for me, and already feels like forever. It's almost like Columbia is putting students on a "silent wait-list". My first thought is that they're waiting until the March 4th deposit deadline to determine the size of their class thus far, and then will dole out a (hopefully) large number of admits. That would mean another week from today at least. Going to be a long wait ...

I like it, you really are getting your $250 worth of speculation in. :-) Good luck!
