Last Year's CBS F'09 thread:
calling-all-columbia-applicants-for-63151.html#p460533

Essay Topics and Deadlines:

Since the January 2010 application officially opens today at 5.PM, I thought I throw in the thread for Early Decision 2010. I know it may be a little early in the game, but has anyone else started preparing their application? This means visiting the school, talking to CBS ambassadors, drafting the essay, etc.

And good luck everyone!

I attended an information session yesterday. Really like the school. Columbia is my #1 now. I'm applying Early Decision. Anyone else?

Undecided to apply ED or RD. I'm applying to six schools (3 of which are dream schools for me). At the same time, I want to put all the chances on my side. Do you think applying during ED increases your chances?

It does increase your chances, but it's binding. That means if you get accepted into ED, you have to go or forfeit $6k. So if you are applying to ED, you better be 100% sure that Columbia is the school for you.

Are there seats allocated to ED ? I get the part that ED will garner really serious applicants but if there are no specific seats allocated to ED, i dont see how it increases ones chances.

The options and deadlines web page specifies that RD is for international applicants... As a non US-citizen, can I still apply in ED? I wouldn't understand the purpose of ED if it does not increase your chances. Is it fair to say that it would otherwise only show those who really consider CBS as their top pick. At which point, it doesn't really mean much...

As far as a certain number of allocated seats for ED, don't quote me on this, but I did hear that a little less than 50% of the incoming class of 09 are ED applicants.

Columbia official answer to the purpose of the ED is so that they can manage their yields, which means getting those yields up.

I'm not sure if internationals can apply to ED. That you would have to call and ask.

I ll be going there next week and will get an definitive answer on this. I am also sailing on the same boat but from what i know, Intl students can apply in ED. I cant think of a plausible reason as to why they would leave out intl students.

One possible reason for not allowing internationals in ED is that there might be more external factors that would prevent an international from being able to fully commit (the current loan climate, visas, etc.) No proof of this, just brainstorming.

6k is a lot of money hehe. If I don't have that much money in the bank, where I can get a loan to pay the deposit?

Haha...atleast they are not asking the 1st term fees upfront or something. On side note, my business brain is thinking, how did thy arrive @ 6k. Maybe some kinda cost covering for the app review process?

Hi all,

I was an ED applicant last year. Got dinged after an interview.

Columbia remains my favorite and am considering it again. ONly this time as a J term applicant. My worry is on how the school will view the change in preference in such a short period of time.

Anyone with more info on J term size and how it is integrated with the 2 year program?

During the info session, they said the jterm is basically the same as regular except you don't have the internship. and you take class throughout the summer as well.

Internationals can DEFINITELY apply for ED. In fact in some cases it makes more sense to (it gives more time to organize visas, financing, moving etc.) I met one Columbia ED admit in Sydney not too long ago.
