Inside Chicago Booth [#permalink] New post 14 Jul 2014, 13:00
FROM Booth Admissions Blog: Inside Chicago Booth
Image
“Booth is a place of community, not conformity.”

“People want to do very well, but not at the expense of their peers.”

“I think to be successful at anything, you have to be open to new ideas and part of that is challenging existing ideas.”

This is how our students describe the unique community and culture that has become a hallmark of our program.  If you’re considering a Booth MBA, or just want to learn more, we invite you to dive #InsideBooth and hear directly from members of the Class of 2015 on how diversity, a pay it forward mentality and the quest for the best ideas has shaped their Booth experience. I encourage you to get to know these passionate students, listen to their stories and understand what makes Booth such a special place for each of them.

Hear how Lance’s leadership skills in the military translated into the classroom at Booth.  Learn how Erin’s architectural background provided a diverse perspective when sharing or challenging ideas. Phil chose Booth because of his passion for Chicago and desire to earn his JD/MBA. Booth’s Chicago approach to teaching and collaboration among students are important aspects of a business school for Nisha as she strives to be a key leader in closing the educational achievement gap. And, as a career changer, finding the right business school was important to Diana.

Soon our Admission team will travel to over 70 cities worldwide hosting events for prospective students. We hope you will join us to meet more students and alumni. We are eager to take you #InsideBooth and help you understand what entices prospective students each year to join our community.

SBSP 2014 Kicks Off! [#permalink] New post 18 Jul 2014, 14:00
FROM Booth Admissions Blog: SBSP 2014 Kicks Off!
Image
Last Saturday, the Summer Business Scholars Program Class of 2014 started their exciting three week adventure in the heart of Chicago’s downtown. I had the pleasure of finally meeting our talented and driven class of fifty-seven scholars face to face after months of anticipation and reviewing their applications. They continue to impress.

Our scholars are a unique and dynamic group of individuals who are spending their summer with us for a variety of reasons. Some are looking to develop core competencies with foundational business concepts such as Accounting, Finance, and Marketing. Some are looking to engage with our world class faculty to discuss their research and fields of expertise to gain insight into the practical and academic paths an MBA can take them on. Others are looking to explore exciting career paths in business by networking with the wide array of professionals we’ll meet on our weekly corporate visits. The Summer Business Scholars Program is structured to serve each of these motivations. Already in week one, the scholars have just finished their accounting course, participated in an eye opening negotiations exercise with Professor Linda Ginzel, and visited the corporate offices of GrubHub, which included a surprise visit from CEO Matt Maloney, all in their first week!

In addition to the academic and professional opportunities SBSP offers, students have a chance to experience the great city of Chicago in its wonderful summer season. After going on a Double Decker Bus Tour and dining out at wonderful restaurants such as Nacional 27 and Lou Malnati’s, students will have the time to experience Chicago’s skyline from the ground up on an architectural boat tour and the top down on the Willis Tower SkyDeck. Several scholars have also planned weekend trips to explore historic musical venues throughout the city, participate in the annual street festivals, and sample all the “Chicago-Style” cuisine they can get their hands on to. They are able to do all this while living together in the heart of downtown Chicago.

SBSP provides the unique opportunity to gain exposure to business principles from diverse perspectives all while developing great relationships in our amazing city. We invite you to follow the SBSP journey on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using #SBSP2014 and #21daysofSBSP. We’re excited to see the rest of SBSP unfold and look forward to seeing them continue to have a transformational experience both in and outside of the classroom.

I don't believe there is a limit, but my idea is to make a 5 slide presentation. If the essay is to long or the presentation has a lot of slides, I believe you will end up loosing the punchline and not conveying the message you want. Of course this is just my opinion...

Meet Booth in Your City [#permalink] New post 30 Jul 2014, 11:00
FROM Booth Admissions Blog: Meet Booth in Your City
Image
Every year our team traverses the globe to meet you and answer questions about Chicago Booth. I’m not gonna lie – travel is one of the best parts of the job. But it’s more than just giving our presentation and seeing the sights; each trip is a chance to meet you on your home turf and better understand the unique background you are bringing to business school.

Our goal during the 70+ events we host world-wide is to better understand how your individual insights combined with the resources available at Chicago Booth can position you to have an impact on the world.

View from “inside” Chicago Booth

We know it’s important to connect with the place and the people as you begin exploring business schools. At our events, we’ll show you how our building – the Charles M. Harper Center – was designed to capture the complete business student experience and how it’s innovative architecture triggers engagement and fosters community among our students.

We’ll also share various Booth perspectives. Whether it’s a student describing how the LEAD class helped him navigate his entire Booth experience, or Professor Austan Goolsbee’s take on the spread of ideas, our hope is that you’ll get sense for how each individual at Chicago Booth shapes the community.

Connect with Booth Alumni

We are fortunate to have alumni in over 115 countries, and each eventwill be an opportunity for you to connect with those who live in your city. We’ll be joined by members of the local alumni community who will speak to their time in Chicago, and share stories about how the experience continues to impact and influence their lives.

Attending an information session can be a meaningful way to prepare for the application process. It’s a tool for you to begin assessing your fit with the school, and imagining the ways in which your individual interests and strengths can be brought to the next level with the help of the support provided. We encourage you to come ready with the questions that are important to you, and look forward to seeing you around the world. Until then, you can learn more about life #InsideBooth by following us on Twitter.

#SBSP2014: The Discovery Doesn't End Here... [#permalink] New post 08 Aug 2014, 08:00
FROM Booth Admissions Blog: #SBSP2014: The Discovery Doesn't End Here...
Image
On July 12, 57 scholars hailing from 19 different countries and pursuing a broad range of interests including education, music and consulting arrived in Chicago for the Summer Business Scholars Program. The scholars brought diverse perspectives, and were ready to discover what it means to pursue and leverage an MBA. Last Friday, they celebrated 21 days of furthering that discovery and reflected on the time spent together within the walls of the Harper Center and beyond.

Image
As they took on intensive courses in Corporate Finance, Accounting, Marketing and Leadership — in which a semester of learning was condensed into a single week! — the SBSP Class of 2014 had the opportunity to interact in workshops with outstanding Booth faculty including Professor Linda Ginzel, who challenged students to share value through cooperation in the process of negotiation; and Professor Art Middlebrooks, who introduced data-driven models for the new age of marketing.

Image
Complementary to the academic experience, the scholars were able to see the different paths that an MBA could take their careers. They looked through an entrepreneurial lens at the Center for Innovation Exchange where Katlin Smith, CEO and Founder of Simple Mills, the recent Chicago New Venture Challenge winner, spoke on the challenges of starting a successful business.

Image
They gained hands-on experience in casework at Boston Consulting Group and C-level insight into investment research at Morningstar, Inc. They felt on top of the world touring the “green” roof of Chicago’s City Hall before receiving sound advice from Deputy Mayor Steve Koch ‘82. Capping off the final week of corporate visits, scholars asked Chicago Cubs owner Tom Ricketts ‘93 about the challenges around of carrying on Wrigley Field’s 100-year-old-legacy from a business and operational perspective.

Through challenges in the classroom and hearing from Chicago Booth alumni who haImage
ve created a space for themselves in diverse industries, the scholars developed a deeper understanding of business and their own interests. They showed curiosity and a willingness to take risks in the midst of ambiguity and actively expanded their self-awareness--making greater sense of strengths and interests. It’s our hope that these insights will help guide them in the next steps of their lives.

Perhaps theImage
greatest takeaway for the Summer Business Scholars was the importance of forming relationships--not only with mentors or teachers, but also with their peers. Much like Chicago Booth students, scholars live to support each other.

They stayed up until the wee hours going over finance homework.TheyImage
ventured out together to find the best food, sports games, and sites, all heavily using #SBSP2014 to document their findings along the way. All cherished the time spent with an incredibly diverse group of young people who they might not have otherwise met. We know our scholars will carry these relationships and a pay-it-forward attitude as they make their way back to the corners of the world from which they journeyed.

Congratulations to the SBSP Class of 2014! It was inspiring to get to know each member of the class and watch their journeys unfold. We can't wait to see where they will take all that they have discovered, and hope that one day it will lead them back to Chicago Booth.

All the best,

Kylie, Glenn and Meghan

That's also my case. I believe you could either leave it blank or simply put a "N.A."
