Agreed - depends on people. I have seen some schools where Russian-speaking folks feel that they are all the same and should spend all the time together - that's a mistake to approach it that way. You will miss a lot of the opportunities.

On the other hand, you are sometimes forced to be there and do it if your English is poor. If others have a hard time understanding the person, they will probably be discouraged from engaging in the same group, meeting, class etc, and thus often due to the language barrier that CIS folks flock together....

My suggestion is not to expect to be helped simply because you speak the same language or come from the same country. Do not expect it but rather be pleasantly surprised when it happens :)

I guess it depends on the school. At Tuck Russian-speaking folks are good friends you can rely on but no one really shares apartments or hangs out together too much. Also, not sure who you tried to contact. I never ignore PMs. Good luck with your applications!

actually, it is a typical behaviour for many students from post-soviet...not helpful at all, sometimes even opposite - providing lame advices to people who are just new to all of this MBA stuff...they see you as a competitor.

1. You have to believe in yourself - this is a long and arduous journey without a guaranteed result in the end and you have to want to get it as it will be hard and painful (getting recommendations, writing excruciating essays, etc). Many people have got in, so the answer is absolutely but depends on what school and amount of effort. MBA application is a lot of work as you know but it also requires personal change.

2. I know many applicants don't think they stand out. That's not true, or at least you have to make it not true for the next 9 months. You are absolutely special and unique in a number of ways. Believe in yourself and think great things. Do great things, and do the things you always wanted to get done now. If you are still feeling you need extra help on your profile/resume/etc - think what you are missing or what other people with unique profiles did, accomplish, engage in and pursue - that will make you a stronger and more interesting individual all around

3. You will need to either explain the low GPA (e.g. nobody in school received GPA higher than 3.0 or 3.2) or you will need to build up an academic profile in some other way (training, courses, etc). GPA is a very important part of the profile and is the most influential factor in your bschool graduation and success, at least based on the Adcom perspective.

Well... this kind of approach will get you nowhere, trust me. As for the options to build up your profile - there are lots of ways of achieving it. For instance, there are on-line courses, such as Coursera or Alison (both are free of charge) or you could just attend lectures at the nearest university to gain some credentials.

Talking about uniqueness and your words that a general office employee can do nothing outstanding... once again, this kind of approach is a dead end. Application package (essay and interview) is not about the way you see yourself, but about selling yourself.

Mate, cheer up, build up your profile and got accepted, period.

Great thread! Thank you PTK. I was surprised to find out that BB and Walker are from CIS. I don't know why, but I thought BB was from Germany and Walker was from the US:)

I'm not sure how ... I read on the forum that English is not his native language and, probably, one of his posts mentioned something about Germany. It is fun how I was mistaken. I hope he at least speaks a little deutsch to make me look better:)
