Well, can't be that no one's considering Cornell at all this year.

I'm most likely applying R1, like the school - think it's somewhat underrated, love Ithaca's slightly hippie/countercultural vibe , and love the school's placements in New York City!

We probably have another couple of months before the application opens, but we at GMATClub are always ahead of the curve.

Hey Everyone,

Just got back from Ithaca and my interview.

I interviewed with two people, one I believe was a staff person who just does interviews I believe and the other was the new associate director of admissions who was being trained on the interviews, both female in case anyone cares. Mr. Corbett in the admissions office was kind enough to warn me that I would have two interviewers. I was told that I was the second interview of the day.

Basically I was told that it would be a conversation style and it'd be about 45 minutes. Then she jumped right into the explain your resume question, what is your career path etc. I was then asked about teamwork and examples of how I worked in teams in both my first job and my current one. Then how I resolve conflicts within a team that I'm a part of. I was also asked for an example of something outside of work where I showed initiative/teamwork.

We then jumped into the standard why MBA/why Johnson questions. I was asked for specific examples of what I wanted to do at Johnson and how I would integrate myself into the community and how I would give back. I was asked again here about community involvement. I was also asked what other schools I was applying to. Then I was asked what is the biggest weakness in my candidacy. After that the floor was opened for questions for me.

The whole thing ended up at about a half an hour. I get really nervous when I interview so I think that I just talked fast as I believe that I said everything I wanted to say and had a few good questions. The interviewers didn't really ask a lot of follow up questions at all which I thought was strange. Kinda threw me for a loop since I didn't elaborate on a lot of stuff so I didn't use all of my material.... I don't know what that means though.

Overall I think I did fairly poorly, but I always get that feeling after I interview so it's probably in my head.

Feel free to post any other questions that you have since I just got back and haven't had time to fully reflect yet.

I'm still in Ithaca folks, bar hopping for the rest of the evening - $2.75 a pint during happy hour, with a (female) bartender sporting a tattoo, a nose ring and a bandanna - I love it here. Unlike at Darden however, she didn't keep referring to me as "darling." My interview went really well I think. If I do not get admitted here either, then there is something drastically amiss with the rest of my application package. I am quite confident my interview feedback will be very positive. I lucked out in that my interviewer was an admissions officer I had met earlier at an MBA fair, so I was a bit more relaxed than I usually am at such conversations. A 2nd year student sat in on the interview as well, but he didn't really ask me much. The overall tone of the interview was, as others have reported, very casual and friendly. Standard "walk me through your resume" question, followed by questions on where and how I had demonstrated "leadership" and "teamwork." What would I "contribute to the Johnson School community" and yes, "where else had I applied?" I stumbled a bit on the last question, not because it was unexpected, but after I gave the interviewer my thoroughly rehearsed spiel, she told me "It seems like you are indeed very enthusiastic about Johnson. May I assume we are your first choice?" and I said "Yes, at this point absolutely." She countered with "Good, I will have that added to your file. If you don't accept our offer however, you can look forward to me calling you personally" and, flustered, I murmured something about "Err...I haven't been to interviews at other schools yet, so it is possible I might change my mind a bit later in the admissions cycle, but right now I do feel very enthusiastic about Johnson." Our chat lasted the full 50 minutes I was scheduled for. I'm not sure how well that went down. Everything else I believe I handled with reasonable poise and confidence. Oh yeah, and Randall Sawyer stopped by to introduce himself while I was waiting in the Admissions Office and that man seriously has this awesomely uncanny ability to remember even the briefest interactions! Soundbite of the day, one of the lead admissions reps telling me that they would be interviewing MORE than 50% of R1 applicants this year. So while scoring an interview during R1 is crossing a major hurdle, it's not quite "almost there" either. Good luck to the rest of you R1 folks -- I'm looking at you nadtrans. They're still sending out invites. My interviewer told me my application had not yet gone through its second review. So things just run a bit slow up here. raabenb - good call on staying at the Statler. It's extremely pricey (dinner room service will run you$50 on average) but extremely convenient in this weather.

It looks like a lot of Cornell admits are leaning towards other schools after the leaked rankings came out, so some spots should open up. There will probably be some waitlist movement pretty soon.

Regardless of the rankings, Cornell is a great school and a fantastic program.
By the time NYC job market recovers, all the NY schools will rise back up.

Cornell MBA of today is the very same school that people applied to when it was #13 or #14 on US News. They didn't change their curriculum or fire all their top professors and faculty. Cornell didn't drop out of Ivy Leagues or lose their alumni network.

You won't be getting an inferior education this coming Fall compared to the education that current 1st years or 2nd years received awhile ago.

Core recruiters of Cornell are not going to abandon Cornell from their list of target schools because the rankings dropped. Contrast to the latest conspiracy theory at BW forum, the recruiters are not having conversation like:

"Wow, did you see the rumor on the internet forums? Apparently Cornell MBA ranking dropped this year! Let's give up on Cornell this year and instead, allocate Cornell recruiting related budget to year end holiday party."

Pretty much all the bschools are suffering from cutbacks in recruiting.

The only people who are making a big deal out of this ranking fluctuation are:

1) USNews (Time & Co) - they want to increase revenue from online subscription, ads, and copies sold.

2) Cornell University Trustees - the Dean won't be getting a bonus or a raise this year.

3) Unlucky and misinformed individuals who decide to go elsewhere because they make a decision solely on this ranking change.

4) BW trolls

I already got the essay for the Park Fellowship in my email this morning less than 24 hours after submitting. That's some quick turnaround right there, hopefully the same will hold true of the rest of the app process.

Essay question:

What is your greatest example of leadership and what personal qualities helped you succeed in that role? Same 400 word limit, due 10 days after the question is received.

Fairly standard leadership question... hope this helps others considering applying for it.

Discuss.

The rankings I like (both the methodology and that Cornell is 1) but that blog now has a post making fun of people on this board for writing essays longer than 400 words:

We shall have the last laugh by getting into Cornell, graduating into top positions, (ethically) making a ton of money and buying www.dis-equilibrium.com and dismantling it into pieces for making fun of us

Actually, I called the adcom about this, since the 10 day deadline was just about up, and I didn't have an essay I wanted to submit. I was hoping to just opt out of the fellowship application, but instead they said not to worry about the deadline, and that they will make a note on my file.

They also informed me that my application review will be put on hold until I submit the fellowship essay. I didn't want to tell them that I decided I don't have any leadership qualities worth mentioning, so I thanked them for the extension. I guess I better pump that essay out quick!

dharmabum wrote:
I wouldn't think so. The people that you send the Park essay to don't work in admissions. My guess is that they don't even read your Johnson app or Park essay until you've been accepted. Why would they? I imagine that checking that box does two things. It gets that automatic e-mail sent, and it flags them to send your application over when you get accepted. Now, take this for what it is worth, because nobosy has told me this. However, in a conversation with one of the people that administrates the program she made it clear that acceptance into Johnson is the first step in the process.

Overall I feel slightly better about the interview after sleeping on it. I'm always so jittery after I get out that I have a bad feeling in my gut and makes me feel down for the rest of the day. The two interviewers seemed very responsive to what I was saying and laughed at some of my jokes and were both very friendly. I definitely connected with both of them.

I feel I could have been stronger when they asked me about why Cornell since I love the school so much and really would be thrilled to get an offer but I was expecting follow up questions which never came. My biggest piece of advice would probably be to just talk until they stop you if you still have coherent stuff to say. I didn't use all of the time allotted to me very wisely.

Also really really think about your community involvement. They asked me twice about initiatives that I had taken in the community and I got stumped the second time since I really said everything I had to say the first time. The first time they were responsive and seemed to get colder the second time when I was confused about what I was saying.

I was also stumped by the weakness question since they asked about it as a CANDIDATE not as a personal weakness. I hadn't prepared for that question.

They also pressed me on why MBA, why aren't you going for your CPA instead, have you tried pursuing other opportunities within your company? I think that I gave them OK answers.

They also really seemed to like that I went for a class visit and came back for a second time. I could have gone to another info session if I had wanted to. I feel like I wouldn't have gotten anything out of doing it a second time though so I opted not to.

Overall, I was solid on the leadership/career path/career goals segment though and I think that an uneven interview is better than a completely negative one (at least that's what I'm telling myself). I'm going to write to my interviewer thanking her and asking her for feedback. If she responds I'll let you know. Hopefully my GMAT will save my app...

The thing I hate most about this process is all the uncertainty. I wish that I could get instant feedback on things but I guess it's all part of this wonderful few months. Especially since now I probably have 2 months to obsess about everything I did wrong while everything I did right slowly seeps out of my memory. Argh...

It sounds like you had a good experience, and I'm sure you are overthinking it. Definitely send a follow-up note, but I recommend not asking your interviewer for feedback.

Thanks Maverick!

I just sent her a brief thank you and just mentioned feedback in passing but put no pressure on her to respond or anything like that. We'll see if I get any response. I doubt that I will because everyone seemed to be really really busy,

Michael Corbett in the admissions office said that he had over 800 emails in his in box and that it stays at about that level no matter how quickly he answers them all. He seemed pretty stressed out. I can only imagine how backed up they are.

Thanks Solaris! I'm trying not to get too freaked out.

I'll definitely second the comment about the futility of email. I was in the admissions office for about half an hour and he was typing FURIOUSLY the whole time and commenting on how many emails he was getting. But, at the same time, he was also answering the phone and his answers were all very helpful from what I overheard.

Definitely call, you'll get a much better, more prompt answer.

The new Cornell chat with Accepted.com is up. It has some interesting information in it.

http://www.accepted.com/chat/Transcript ... rnell.aspx

I will post some highlights below.

"Linda, we have four rounds, with Round One concluded last week. Percentages of offers are higher for those in Round One. Round Two is strong and Rounds 3 and 4 are much tougher, with Round Four being very difficult. Last year we had 500 apps in Round 1, 750 in Round 2, 1300 in Round 3 and 400 in Round Four--by the time we got to Round Four, most of the class was filled."

"Ruche, we do not count the number of words exactly, but we did deny a candidate last year who submitted essays far above our word limit. I recommend remaining under 400 words."

Randall Sawyer was quite descriptive when describing the admissions process. For Cornell applicants the chat is a must read.

Are they going to have reviewed everyone by this week or are they going to be ready to review everyone? I've been "under review" for 10 days now and I'm starting to get a bit crazy

I guess they would have prepared all applications for review by the weekend! many of us are still waiting for the status to change from "received" to "under review"

The interviewers didn't really ask a lot of follow up questions at all which I thought was strange. Kinda threw me for a loop since I didn't elaborate on a lot of stuff so I didn't use all of my material.... I don't know what that means though.

I think a lack of follow-up questions or interruptions from the interviewer is usually good. It means you answered their question clearly, completely, and concisely. At least that's how I interpret it.

PS I don't have submit/interview dates for everyone (and I'm too lazy to go back and look for them). Also, you can add interview dates as well (if applicable), so feel free to update accordingly.
