OK all those who attended the BDW...

Was there some talk official/unofficial about the recent drop in the rankings? Specially regarding the surprising placement statistic on those rankings...

Any other information worth sharing ??

Where's our Duke report? Interested to hear how much fun everyone had.

I had a great time meeting everyone at BDW. I will be posting pictures from the apartment tour. However, my feeling was that they showed us very expensive apartments. I liked them, but a little outside of what I would like to pay for a place I will rarely see.

Well,it probably depends on your perspective. As someone who comes from a larger, more expensive city all the apartments are a steal and they're super nice. I'd probably have to pay at least 1400 in DC to get something similar to Station 9 here. You could always get a roommate that would help reduce your costs.

I had a great time at BDW too. Duke did a fantastic job and I met so many really great people while I was there.

I agree that if you want luxury you pay less for it in Durham. I have lived in very very expensive cities over the years so my initial reaction is the same. However, the local market is much much cheaper than these places would lead you to believe. Take a look at Pinnacle Ridge, Belmont, Springfield.

That being said, The lofts and Station 9 are pretty good. I agree about the roomate, but I will be getting married in the summer and am unsure that having a roomate would be a good thing. Although if I found the right person I would consider it.

If ndhlp and I hadn't bought a house, we would have rented an apartment in a house, or a small house. Yes, S9 and company are comparatively expensive (though you get pretty nice amenities, with the pool, lounge, gym, etc). Try Trinity Heights, Trinity Park, Old West Durham, and Watts-Hillandale. I like these neighborhoods a lot. When we were looking last year, we saw 2-BR places for ~$600.

You won't live in the middle of the action, but it's a better price.

Thought some of you might like to see this. Gavan Fitzsimmons is one of the most popular core professors - some of you might have attended his class if you came in November or December. Dan Ariely is a recent addition, and his class - Behavioral Economics - is one that people talk about at company dinners and parties...and a whole bunch more:

Global Player

Dean Sheppard’s January visit to Dubai earned coverage as he met with local officials to discuss fostering talent in the United Arab Emirates. Read the story in the Khaleej Times:

Fundamental Issues

Health Care – The role of the school’s Health Sector Management team in the passage of legislation providing priority review vouchers to drug makers researching neglected diseases was detailed in an editorial from BioWorld Today.

Health Care
– media worldwide, including the New York Times (http://tinyurl.com/2lpzlx) and London Telegraph (http://tinyurl.com/3cwaff) reported on Professor Dan Ariely’s research indicating that $2.50 placebo pills were more effective at reducing pain than placebos that cost 10 cents.

Economy – Professor Campbell Harvey was interviewed on several different NPR programs this month, covering the Bear Stearns sale and the Federal Reserve’s rate cuts.

Economy – Professor Dan Ariely spoke with Fox Business News and Marketplace regarding how consumers are likely to respond to the government’s economic stimulus rebates.

Students of Consequence

A group of first-year Duke MBA – Daytime students (SECTION 3 - THAT'S MINE!!) used the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday as a volunteer opportunity at a Durham homeless shelter, gaining coverage in the Herald-Sun and several online outlets.

Duke MBA – Daytime second-year Mayuresh Tapale was interviewed by Business Week for their Valentine's day article about dating at Fuqua for LGBT minorities. http://www.businessweek.com/bschools/co ... op+stories

Leader in Educational Technology

The Financial Times reported on Fuqua’s partnership with Polycom to develop new telepresence videoconferencing that will provide remote participants with a “same room” experience. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/2/4bdbaa60-f1a3 ... fd2ac.html

The AACSB featured Fuqua’s pioneering work with virtual worlds in its magazine, BizEd. http://www.fuqua.duke.edu/catalog/docum ... nmedia.pdf

Research Advantage

Professor Dan Ariely’s new book, Predictably Irrational, has been on the New York Times best sellers list since February. The book has received extensive media coverage in outlets including TIME magazine (http://www.time.com/time/specials/2007/ ... 79,00.html) and on the CBS Early Show (http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video ... d=3844567n).

Research on mimicry's influence on persuasion by Ph.D. student Robin Tanner and Professor Tanya Chartrand was detailed in the New York Times’ Science Times section. http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/12/health/12mimic.html

The most recent release of the Duke University/CFO Magazine Global Business Outlook Survey gained worldwide media attention, with Professors John Graham and Campbell Harvey being quoted in reports by the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Associated Press, Reuters, Bloomberg, CNBC, NPR and a host of other major outlets. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/89bd60a0-ef94 ... fd2ac.html

Did you spot a famous face on campus? Yes, it’s true. Alan Alda was at Fuqua in March to film interviews and experiments with Professor Tanya Chartrand. Chartrand’s work will be included in a new documentary series, “The Human Spark,” scheduled to air on PBS in 2009.

Fuqua ranked # 3 in a survey by the University of Texas at Dallas School of Management of research productivity – up several places from last year – in both the North America and worldwide listings. The rankings consider the number of articles published by faculty in 24 leading academic journals over the previous five years. http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show ... 5387.shtml

Professors Gavan Fitzsimons and Tanya Chartrand’s research into the ways brands can affect human behavior was featured in Advertising Age (http://adage.com/article?article_id=125887), on NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... d=89205286 ), in The Wall Street Journal (http://blogs.wsj.com/biztech/2008/03/20 ... trackback/) the Boston Globe (http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas ... knowledge/), and others including Der Speigel; for which we also send a special thank you to our Duke-Goethe colleague Mariele Prussner for her excellent translation assistance!

Dear wonderful aaudetat,

Have a question for you that I think many of us Duke admits might be interested in. Computing. The admit portal does not seem to have a direct link to information, and the information I do have I want to remain in denial about.

I am a Mac user, and do not like the idea of buying a new pc laptop before arriving at school. Is it possible to use a Mac or is it a bad idea?

If you do not respond in an efficient fashion I will reveal the TRUE meaning of your user name to the entire gmat community!!

Thanks!

I know you are joking and aaudetat will probably not mind. Just try to be nice when you have a question. Some members here have earned their respect on the forum with their contributions and aaudetat is one of them.

Hey defenestrate,

I can tell you that I've done quite a bit of research on this and just recently bought a new Mac to use at school. This is what I've heard from the 4-5 people I've talked to.

If you use Parallels (or VMware Fusion) and Win XP, you won't have any problems at all with compatibility. With that said, most of the students stop using Parallels when they realize they don't even need it because Mac Office 2004 is fully compatible with MS Office 2003, which was the school standard this year. Things may change (i.e. Office 2007 standard), but it seems unlikely to me.

Bottom line, there are plenty of people with Macs and thus there should be a good support group to deal with any issues that may arise. Hope that helps.

I was trying to joke, which it seems I am not very good at. Aaudetat, truly sorry to offend if I did. Bdevil, thanks for the input it is very helpful. Look forward to seeing you both in Durham soon.

Thanks for jumping in, Bdevil. There are plenty of people who use Macs. You may find that some applications are a bit tricky, but it seems like the Mac people get by just fine.

No worries, defenestrate.
