How much does MIT weigh interest and/or experience in technology? Is MIT more partial to candidates that have a tech background?

Hi Everyone,

I was recently surfing the BW forums and I came across a topic string that discussed the MIT cover letter and various strategies. What I took away from it was that it seems that many people did as the prompt asked and addressed moments of impact throughout their careers. Doing so, many felt that it left no room to address why an MBA and why MIT.

I took a different route. I addressed one core accomplishment with detail (although somewhat truncated) and mentioned a few others without as much detail. I then used the remainder of the essay to address why MIT and why an MBA.

Have I made a fatal MIT app error? Would I have been better to only address accomplishments?

How did you all approach this topic?

Thanks! - Duc

PS - Is this wait driving anyone else mad??

My understanding is that a cover letter has an inbuilt question about your fit and that you are seeking a position in that organization....

they added a few more questions to it which they specifically want...

so what you did is the right thing....

tell about yourself
accomplishments - along your career path...concise
and one of the accomplishments can be the long lasting impact
and then your fit...
and what you give back

thats what I did...

And dont wait....as per my research....it will start from 7th dec....

hope that helps....and dun sweat...what you sent already is done...so hope for the best!!!

cheers!

On the contrary, I think you took the perfect route. The cover letter should, by default, speak about why you are a good fit for the organization.

MIT specifically asked for an accomplishment so a good way would be to show how that accomplishment makes you a good candidate.

the adcomm at an info session said they get annoyed when they see a complete emphasis on fit/why mit in the cover letter, but i think its certainly worth putting in.

he specifically said its a problem is when applicants say "i am applying for class of 2012. mit is an amazing place and would be a perfect fit because of x,y,z" right off the bat. they would prefer the cover letter be about you and not sloan.

but i wrapped up the cover letter with a paragraph on fit. i found its a logical way to tie everything together and provide a strong conclusion for the cover letter.

Thanks for the feedback! I definitely tried to worked with examples that emphasized a fit with MIT's culture. I guess I am more stressed about this app because MIT really is my first choice out of the schools I applied for and I put an extra level of concentration on this app. But as Zaphod said, no use stressing until early December!

Another question to all of you: I hold a technologist diploma from a Canadian school and an Engineering degree from a small state school with a GPA of 3.5. The school is not well known in general but is very well respected in my industry. So my question is this; do you think my "unique" career as an oil and gas exploration and development engineer is enough to offset a non top tier undergrad school?

Thanks again and good luck!

Your industry and your school are two distinct aspects of your application and one may not offset another. School tells about your academic qualification and your job talks about your professional promise. If your school is not very well known then the GMAT would carry more weight. Having said that, it all depends on how to fit this in your story. More than the industry, what you did with your job carries more weight. If you have stellar accomplishments then that will definitely help. However, if you havent done much at your job then its not going to offset your school experience, even if you are in a unique industry.

Hope this helps (on the second thought, dont sweat about it, application is already in and you cant do much so rather concentrate on what you have in hand :) )

Quick Question guys...
During i/vs for the transcripts that we have to produce...is it mandatory that the transcript shd be addressed to MIT.In my case my transcript has the field where the name of Insti I am applying to is blank.

While uploading I entered the name myself. But during the i/vs we wd require transcripts in sealed envelop frm college..I do have sealed transcripts...but the field for college name(the one to which aI am applying to) is blank.

Will that suffice or do I need to get the transcript again frm my college??

What you have is more than enough. Some school dont even have this sort of fields in their transcripts. So having a blank field for college name will not make any difference. You should be fine.

ROLL CALL PAGE UPDATED

If your name is not on the list, post below and make sure you follow the forum format. Include the round you are applying, and etc so the roll call page can get updated accordingly.

Also, if someone wants to take over the roll call page update duty for MIT F2010 thread, let me know. I try to update it as much as possible but I had exams and new classes started in the last few weeks so I was preoccupied. Good luck to all the applicants.
