Here is how I did mine. I am a R1 applicant who has interviewed =) Good luck

1) Warm greeting followed by expressing your interest in applying to MIT Sloan. State the intended field that you'd like to pursue and how it is changing in today's time; show how MIT's culture and curriculum will change you coming in as an X individual and leaving Sloan doors as a Y individual ready to tackle on the new demands of your career trajectory.

2) How have you prepared for the Sloan MBA rigors? What is it that you're still missing? What is critical to your success that will make you an agent of change in your desired field.

3) Tell me about your current or prior role in the work field that has inspired you to move forward. In particular, give me a situation from this role where you made a big difference and really changed the way you saw things. You need be very detailed about what you did, how you did it and how you felt. What did your success show you? (THIS IS SO IMPORTANT)

4) You want to leave Rod Garcia in suspense about what's to come in essays 2, 3 and 4 so make sure that the last paragraph gives him a glimpse of the main experience that you will be addressing in each essay, particularly, before you write this paragraph, you may want to preface it with a sentence of what these stories say about you. Do you like living outside your comfort zone? Are you hell-bent on being inclusive and bringing others together? etc.

You want to close with how ready you are to make that stride to Sloan.

Hope this helps! =)

I just spoke to MIT Admissions. They told me that yesterday was their first batch of invites to NYC. Since NY has a large applicant pool, she said invites will trickle out over the next 2 days ...

She also said some international invites were out ... But the next week or so NY / Boston / Chicago / CA will be out. There's still hope for the next 7-8 days I guess

Quick Question guys...
During i/vs for the transcripts that we have to produce...is it mandatory that the transcript shd be addressed to MIT.In my case my transcript has the field where the name of Insti I am applying to is blank.

While uploading I entered the name myself. But during the i/vs we wd require transcripts in sealed envelop frm college..I do have sealed transcripts...but the field for college name(the one to which aI am applying to) is blank.

Will that suffice or do I need to get the transcript again frm my college??

What you have is more than enough. Some school dont even have this sort of fields in their transcripts. So having a blank field for college name will not make any difference. You should be fine.

levfin2003 - how did you know they have a unique scoring process? I haven't heard anything like that. Can you please expand on that - what are the dimensions?

Here are some details on their scoring process. Also, check at some earlier posts on this forum that say the same thing.

Sloan looks at about nine attributes, including, for example, GMAT score, GPA, work success and leadership. The Admissions Committee divides the attributes into two major groups: demonstrated success (e.g., GPA, GMAT, work accomplishments) and leadership attributes (e.g., high competency in creativity, relationship building, goal setting, influencing). Each attribute group is scored separately, and the two scores are then added together.

(From the chat) This gives me hope:

JenBarba: we're still inviting people to interviews. only the very first batch have gone out.
...
JenBarba: round 1 invites have not all been sent out yet. we are just beginning to invite r1 apps, and invites will continue to go out throughout the end of january

Please, no one crush my dreams by telling me that the "very first batch" equals "everyone from your hub city!"

Edited to stave further knee-jerk reactions and thread derailment. Not my intention at all, apologies to anyone it bothered, but lighten up a bit.

I've had quite a bit of anxiety this might have bothered someone and only got 4hrs of sleep last night as a result. Please send a private message to this account if it bothered you and I'll explain what I meant and personally apologize. Again, the following responses were not my intention AT ALL.

Misconstrued or not, it could be seen as offensive. Thanks for the edit and understanding how others might have a negative reaction.

Noodle,

Why is it so unlikely for someone to choose Sloan over H/S/W based purely on indeterminate rankings? This is really ludicrous.

Having had the good fortune of being admitted to Sloan, Harvard, and Wharton during round 1, I will elect to go to Sloan unless I'm accepted to Stanford during Round 2. This decision was the result of a myriad of factors... certainly not any blind adherence to some general notion of ranking.

Sorry if I come off sounding miffed, but I don't think there's anything particularly different about me than others in my situation, and I'm offended by the concept that my decision to go "against" rankings (if I'm really doing so) is indicative of some misjudgment.

aj1545,

As a graduate of the Haas undergraduate program, I can tell you that the school is very focused in green and energy tech, and there were any number of MBA students while I was there that were engaged in the industry. Stanford, from my understanding, is the same. That being said, I would not say that it's very computer tech focused... there's very little cross curriculum between Haas and the College of Engineering, and the school itself doesn't focus on computer technology. I'm inclined towards Sloan because of its strength in this area -- a strength that is perhaps only rivaled by Stanford, in my understanding. I think any of the three schools would be an excellent choice for a tech centric MBA experience.

*Noodles interview write up for MIT Sloan*

As interview prep I read through my application and thought of any further questions Sloan could ask. I came up with 8-9 stories for the behavioural questions. Using http://www.clearadmit.com/wiki/index.php?title=SloanInterview as my main guide for questions. I rehearsed these and came up with 6 questions to ask adcom if I had the chance. I had the flu at the time of the interview but battled on regardless :D

Right......my interview was in London, UK and was with one member of the Adcom, Mr Rod Garcia himself.

I told Rod I had the flu straight off and he got me some water......and we had some small talk to settle in with. I am not sure how in depth Rod knew my application in terms of the answers to my essay questions but he knew 3 things......(i) I went to Cambridge (ii) I worked for a big investment bank and got promoted and (iii) I knew a current student at Sloan.

We first talked about my experiences at Cambridge - and I told him about my 2 friends who went to MIT for their undergraduate. I then worked in "Why Sloan" here.

We then talked about my experiences at the bank I work for......and how I see the future. Specifically recruitment picking up. I told him about my background and tried to work in "Why MBA" here. He asked me when I got promoted and followed this up with what my future plans were after the MBA.

We also briefly talked about my high school and I told him about my academic scholarship and the wonderful opportunities at my school to travel to other countries.

We also talked about my friend at Sloan (who he knew) and I explained how my friend had told me all these great things about Sloan and how I also went to the information session in London. So this really was more "Why Sloan" here.

In terms of behavioural questions I was asked (i) A time I stepped outside of my comfort zone at work and (ii) A time I had an idea challenged at work. These went fine. I asked 3-4 questions and this took a bit of time.

All in all it lasted 45-50 minutes and was very relaxed and conversational. I have no idea how I did.....I felt I could have done better and perhaps been more specific about Why MBA but all in all was okay.

All I'm saying is they didn't go out until around now last year. I bet they go out this week. I will be pretty surprised if they don't.

Remember, they have committed to an April 5th decision deadline. The adcom needs to fly around the world and interview everyone themselves. Because of this, they probably like to have a pretty good idea of where each applicant stands prior to sending out invites to limit the work load. (They made it harder on themselves by deferring so many people to R2, not that I'm complaining). Still, after they finish traveling and interviewing, they still need to reconvene and make decisions. They can't wait much longer, so expect something soon.

Unless they decided to interview far fewer people for R2 this year! :(
What if the R1 pool filled out a greater part of the class?

What about Texas? Do people from Texas even get accepted to MIT?

Please share if anyone remembers the pattern from last year.

I'm interested in Texas (assuming it's the same time zone as Chicago's). What do R1 ppl say?

Edit: Ok, I perused this thread for R1, and first invites for NYC and international countries were sent on 12/6. Someone in Ohio (same timezone for Texas/Chicago I assume) got an invite during the week of 12/17 presumably after ding day of 12/16. Some continued to received invites on 12/18. Some were in limbo afterwards. So based on the same pattern, if NYC invites waere sent today on 3/1, ding day should be ten days later on 3/11. And Midwest people as well as others should get invites afterwards. But this is all hypothetical and hearsay. But at least I have 3/11 as a date that I can watch on my calendar!

I got the news that I am dinged through my wife - she was a MIT grad (not Sloan) and had written a letter of support to Rod. She got a personal e-mail from Rod informing her of the bad news. He also mentioned that I will be officially notified this Friday.

Bummed but glad that I at least have one admit. Good luck to everyone else.

yah. i got the news yesterday that i am dinged through a good friend of mine (Sloan grad) that wrote a letter of support to Rod as well. Rod did not mention a time, but said that all he could relay was that applications were extremely competitive this year (12 apps for 1 spot) and that truly only stanford would be comparable.

it was extremely disappointing considering that i felt my application essays were rock strong (i had two sloan graduates review them excessively and then send an LOS after submission, they were both really sure i would at least get an interview). plus i had been 2 for 2 for those schools where i had this opinion so it was also a bit disconcerting as it reminded me i have no offers from any school yet and despite interviews or what i think, its still a possibility i get dinged everywhere.

i do not mean to be dramatic for those of you who have not received invites from any schools, but for me it is still indeed a sobering thot. anyway. good luck to those who receive MIT interviews. youve earned it in a banner year. cheers

This is pathetic. I got dinged from mit, but should be accepted soon to a top 20 program for reasons I won't detail. However, we give these app committee jokers way too much power. I mean, we all have different reasons for going back. The GMAT is truly the best test of one's ability in the classroom. However, they place all this emphasis on some BS essays that don't mean $hit in the real world, and expect to mold the business leaders of tomorrow from the decisions they make. How about interviewing based on intelligence (GMAT). Well, we actually don't do a lot based on intelligence as a country. I personally have made a lot of $$ betting against the standard US stock market investments over the last 5 years and don't expect that to change any time soon. Don't drink the kool-aid. Be smart. Most of these places aren't going to really teach you anything, btw.
