To touch on the housing situation for int'l students, the same applies for UCLA. It's going to be pretty pricey if you're looking for anything near campus... this is LA. That said, public transit to and from campus should be pretty easy to use, so you can find a place probably a few miles from campus that's a quick bus ride over. The surrounding UCLA area is a little safer than USC's though.

The surrounding UCLA area is a little safer than USC's though. When I visited the campus and met with admissions, they basically told me that it was more of a commuter campus and folks drove in from the city (not surprising given that it is LA). I don't think you should expect to find many of your MBA classmates in the nearby USC area. That was just my impression though, when I visited.

I went to USC for a (not business) graduate degree. My guess is that there will be some internationals who take advantage of USC graduate housing (which is either on or very near campus), but the vast majority of students will not. Some will make the mistake of living around USC, but it's expensive for what it is, and it is not nice at all. It's definitely not the safest area. You're unlikely to get shot or anything, but you'll never feel safe walking home at night or anything.
Many people will live Downtown, which is a super quick drive unless it's afternoon rush hour. For some reason, morning rush hour is no problem to get to USC from downtown, but afternoon going from USC to Downtown is a bit slower. Downtown has some nice, fancy places, but they're usually very expensive. Many of the areas have not fully developed so if you like to walk to places to eat, etc. you'll need to check the area carefully.
You'll find a lot of people living west hollywood, century city and westward to the beaches. These vary a lot in terms of price and comfort.
Some people will likely live in the valley and pasadena. These probably win in terms of how nice your apartment will be for how much money you're spending, but you'll likely be away and isolated from most of your classmates. Depending on the time of day, your drive to school probably won't be any longer than those on the westside, though.
Public transportation is not very easy, depending on where you live, actually. That may change in your time there as they're building a new train line that stops right next to the business school, but I suspect it won't be done yet. The only people I knew who used public transportation did so because they didn't have cars and couldn't get a ride from someone else that day.
By the way, I highly recommend using Westside rentals to find an apartment. It costs a little bit, but it is completely and totally worth it. You'll find better apartments than craigslist because landlords like to rent to westside rentals people. The service makes it way easier to find apartments in a very specific location with specific amenities, and the listings are huge.
I hope this helps!

how is the student/community life if most people are a fair distance away from school? is it still kinda close or more like they just get their business done and go home?

I'm a first-year student in the Marshall FT program, and we recognize the need for tours during the Thanksgiving week. Unfortunately, we have one day of regular classes on Monday 11/22 followed by a final exam on Tuesday 11/23. Then, we're off for Thanksgiving break, so the only day we can manage class visits in Monday. Initially, we were not planning to offer tours that week, but with the increased demand, we are now offering tours on Monday 11/22. We apologize for not being able to accommodate more visitors, but with the academic schedule, it's simply not possible. Please call the admissions office at (213) 740-7846 to arrange a tour and class visit. Thanks for your interest in Marshall, and we look forward to meeting you!

I applied in round one last year (2009) and received notification of an interview in the first week of January. I interviewed several weeks later and decisions were released in the first week of March. I don't know anything about this year's timeline, but that's what happened to me last year.

wow first week of jan? Well for R1 this year int. invitations 12/1 and complete by 1/21 with notify date 2/1 so about a month and half early than your timeline. so we *should* receive invites before 12/1 assuming the dates are last dates since 11/1 was the last day for R1...

I am going to see where i can get some patience :D

I talked with Joanne, who was quite nice and helpful. After going through some security questions and such, I was able to get my ID. I was also able to confirm with her that the invites to interview will be going out on December 1, just as their website says.

I applied in Rd 1, and I did not get the ID either. I made an email request a couple of days ago and have been waiting. I have my login and passwd to login and check the app status. Sorry to sound ignorant, what is the purpose of an ID this early in the application process?

Sorry to sound ignorant, what is the purpose of an ID this early in the application process? I wouldn't worry too much about it. It's supposed to be used to identify yourself in any future correspondence with Marshall. It really isn't that big of a deal. The person in admissions I talked with earlier today said that she had talked to the director about this. The director said that this had happened to a number of people and to help anyone that called get their ID. They are aware of the problem and are working on correcting it. Still, the impact of having your ID on your current status is non-existent. As long as you received the earlier email confirming your application for the program, you are in their system.
