Calling all Female MBA Applicants [#permalink]

Following up on a post by 2012dreams, this thread is to discuss particular scholarships/fellowships for women, interesting facts about female applicants, recruiting and on-campus events, application strategies, or just discuss some of the things we'll be dealing with "trying to balance work and life" (however cliche that may be). List of current female GMATClubbers applying for the class of 2012. If I missed you, please, add your name to the list: ElleBee (DUKE)HCGirl10 2012dreams MBAgirl2010 highhopes ariel aditi123 cozmo8 claire84 kbonnie sapphireka Salisaaa thescientist alymarie dreamer2achiever LB20 Milie ChicagoGurl2012 nehag84 arora2m AspiringSloanie snowdrift annae eekthecat Gmatter111 chicagoan Aenigma muffeebrown klr anu1979 mashazee theDreamChaser manasa zippy10 ykostyuk dcdevil gottabwise zhyl conmisdosmanos amanda2010cn (Admitted to Darden) westsew lesdeux sneaky justniky DesiGirl BSbound Mystik742 Other female GMATClub members: 11MBA mrsmarthi marymary piyatiwari (class of 2011) Useful threads for Women applicants:business-attire-for-women-58705.htmlhttp://www.shirky.com/weblog/2010/01/a- ... out-women/Thanks! To kick-off the discussion. During a Forte forum I attended recently, Admissions directors mentioned that in order to balance the Men:Women ratio they do not plan to accept women at lesser standards, but are trying to broaden the spectrum of female applicants that apply so they can get more qualified female candidates. Indeed, the main focus of the forum seemed to be to attract women who are looking into other fields such as law and medicine and to make them consider MBA as an option. On another note, it would be interesting to see this year and last year what percentage of GMATClub women who applied got accepted to the top schools and if that differs from the rest of the applicant pool. What do you think?

Great thread to get going. I am a female applicant but don't intend to apply until next fall, so I don't think I can be added to the list. However, I am still very interested to hear what you guys have to say about the application process.
I think the admission officer you met is definitely right about the push to get more female MBA students. I do see a lot of schools are increasing their percentage of women in their student body. Wharton and NYU for example both reached the 40% for the first time this fall. Although, I'm sure the admissions officer is right about accepting only qualified women, I do think the criteria is more relaxed for female applicants. When male and female applicants with similarly impressive stats apply, the female applicant will usually get into more and better programs than the male. Don't know if this observation is in line what your experiences as well.

Put me on the "other" list, I'm planning on applying for the class of 2013.
I agree that they aren't blatantly letting unqualified women in, but I do think it at least acts as a tiebreaker if a qualified male and female were pitted against each other.

Would certainly be nice! Yes, I'm doing all of my apps R1. Submitted HBS on Monday and Wharton this AM - feels GREAT to have those off my plate. How about you? I am taking things slowly and trying to do my best with every app. I took my HBS app through hell and back with revisions and had several alumnae friends read through essays for advice, etc. As a result I am really happy with what came out (also exhausted). I will do Wharton and Emory with the same approach for R2, this way I have no regrets as to what I could have done better (plus I'm not in a rush). Thinking of dropping Stanford for family reasons.

That sounds like a great plan. I know how you feel about HBS. I killed myself on HBS and Stanford, and as a result, I was not quite as happy with the Wharton result. You may have made the better decision by not rushing to get it in if you aren't yet happy with the end product! Good luck... now begins the long wait until the end of the month when we hear about those HBS interviews! MBAgirl2010 wrote: HCGirl10 wrote: Would certainly be nice! Yes, I'm doing all of my apps R1. I hear the interviews may be announced in the third week of the month. 20 days are a fairly short time, I wonder how the HBS adcom would pull that off. Posted from my mobile device

I'm down for whenever, MBAgirl2010. How about next week? Since not everyone can log in from work, how about we say 8 or 9pm EST (that way folks on the west coast can join too). If there is interest from applicants in Europe/Asia, etc perhaps we can schedule something over the weekend?
