FROM Haas Admissions Blog: Why MBA? 8 Reasons that Go Beyond the Obvious
Like many people who consider going to b-school, you may want an MBA to advance your career. To change roles or work in an entirely new field. To build leadership skills and gain expertise in new areas. To land your dream job or launch your own venture.

All excellent reasons to get an MBA.

But at Haas, we believe there’s a lot more to business school than your first post-MBA job title—which brings us to, 8 reasons to get an MBA that go beyond the obvious:

1. Reinvent yourself. This is the place to spend some time figuring out what you're good at - and to surprise yourself by discovering that you don't even know yet what some of those things might be.  In business school, you'll find opportunities to get some feedback (even to solicit it) - aggressively.  To be inquisitive and learn from what others do and how they got there.

2. Chew on some really big issues. When was the last time you spent 120 minutes discussing globalization or technological innovation? Opportunities to become a subject matter expert in new (and important) areas occur in b-school daily. Make that hourly.

3. Make friends with a few CEOs. The intensity of b-school forges lifelong friendships—with people who are clearly going places. Of course, this means nothing unless you actually like these future CEOs, so as part of your b-school evaluation process, it's important to make sure that you do.

4. Get unabashed access to business leaders. You’d be surprised how often top executives take time out to share their wisdom with MBA students. (This could be you one day, and we hope you’ll do the same.) When business leaders come to campus, it presents a great opportunity to learn how leading executives handle leadership challenges.  This is b-school as the backstage pass.

5. Gain inside perspective on global cultures. When will you have another five-week winter vacation? That b-school semester break represents travel to the home countries of your classmates and the opportunity to gain insights, both business and cultural, and even to catch a little R & R. Believe us, you will have earned it!

6. Fail without getting fired. While business school prepares you for the real world, it isn’t the real world—you won’t lose your job if you take a risk, even make a mistake. This makes it the optimal time to take on new leadership roles, try classes that seem challenging, and to step outside your comfort zone.

7. Tackle business problems for big organizations, and be taken seriously. B-school will give you a chance to consult for world-renowned firms on real-life business problems. How do we expand into an emerging market? Which competitor should we acquire? How should we price our new product? Yup, you will help firms answer these questions—and feel (almost) ready to do so (See #6).

8. Feel awesome, almost all the time. Seriously. Most MBAs will tell you that business school was the best two years of their life. That’s a pretty bold statement, but speaks to the potential of this experience you’re considering. So, reflect on what is most important to you in a program, and go for it.

There you have it – 8 reasons to go to business school that go beyond the obvious. Want a look at just how awesome it can be? Take a look at the Haas Class of 2014 MBA experience in 3 minutes - this could be you!

Comparing Business Schools? Meet Berkeley-Haas [#permalink] New post 24 Jun 2014, 13:00
FROM Haas Admissions Blog: Comparing Business Schools? Meet Berkeley-Haas
Perhaps your business school journey began with a nagging sense that there must be something more to the 9-to-5. Something more stimulating, more rewarding. Something with more passion and ownership.

So you decide to get an MBA. It will open doors--to leadership, opportunity, and change. And now, you begin the process of weighing what seems like a staggering number of options for b-school.

How will you choose?

Image

These could be the best two years of your life, if chosen wisely – so thorough research is imperative.

You’ve probably already realized that a number of top MBA programs are well positioned to help you to advance your career, start a business, or pursue a dream. We’d like to tell you a bit about what differentiates the Berkeley MBA from other top-tier programs:

A Location with Innovation in its DNA
When Berkeley MBA students organize a conference on digital media (as they do every year), 600+ people turn out, including top industry speakers such as Facebook CIO Tim Campos and Box CEO Aaron Levie.

That’s because the Berkeley MBA Program’s Bay Area location puts you at the heart of the global technology industry, the birthplace of venture capital, a growing hub for cleantech and biotech, and the center of the U.S. wine market. This is b-school as the backstage pass.

Image

Lyft CEO Logan Green and Andreessen Horowitz Partner Michael Copeland address the student-run >play Digital Media Conference

Katie Benintende, MBA 15, describes this as “learning the tech ecosystem from the best seat in the house,” since students get to hear from speakers such as Indiegogo Co-Founder and alumna Danae Ringelmann at orientation, Autodesk CEO Carl Bass in a class on intrapreneurship, and Novartis CEO and Dean’s Speaker Joe Jimenez (A Haas alum). Our location creates opportunities as well for some meaty competitions and challenges.

Image

Berkeley MBA 14 students compete in the Bosch Robotic Challenge

And then there’s UC Berkeley, one of the world’s top universities and a name that opens doors around the globe. Behind that name you’ll find top-ranked graduate programs (the Berkeley MBA among them) to tap for cross-disciplinary classes and colleagues.

Image

Team an MBA student with a mechanical engineer and you bring new clean technology to market

A Class Size that Yields a Student-Driven Experience
Yes, it’s who you know. But it’s also how well you know them. Each full-time Berkeley MBA class is made up of 240 accomplished yet attitude-free individuals (see Culture below)—and you get well acquainted in surprisingly short order.

Image

Bonding starts with orientation, or “Week Zero”

Being smaller than most other top MBA programs means we offer students the opportunity to form stronger bonds, to take leadership roles, and to receive greater personal attention from faculty and from career advisors.

It also means that Berkeley MBA students make things happen. They organize industry conferences, exploring topics from digital media to healthcare and business in Latin America.

Image

Co-Chairs Stephanie Curran and Lauren Fernandez, both MBA 14, applied design thinking to the 2014 Women in Leadership Conference

They plan global treks for their classmates over semester break, taking them to sip tea with the vice president of Taiwan, tour a Toyota plant in Japan, meet the mayor of Jerusalem, and study innovation in a closed economy in Cuba.

Image

More than 60 classmates and partners joined Moulay Driss Belkebir Mrani, MBA 15, on a visit to his home country of Morocco, one of many student-led treks for the class of 2014.

The five Berkeley MBA students who guided 55 travelers through Israel wanted their guests to experience of the “reality” of the country, based on personal experience and not on perception.

Image

Traveling with your Berkeley MBA classmates over semester break (here, in South America) requires no leap of faith

A Culture that forges Innovative Leaders and Lifelong Friendships
Here at Berkeley-Haas, we focus on developing innovative leaders—who know how to put new ideas to work, and to do so responsibly. These leaders hone their skills not just through classroom learning, but through our four Defining Principles, a set of values shared by the Berkeley-Haas community: Question the Status Quo, Confidence Without Attitude, Students Always, and Beyond Yourself.

Image

Question the Status Quo, one of four Berkeley-Haas Defining Principles

It makes all the difference to study with professors who request feedback on their teaching, to be in a classroom with fellow students willing to ask questions, to be part of a project team whose members don’t hesitate to share their expertise (or study notes) with others.

Image

Students go beyond themselves on a public service day  during orientation

And our alumni—the ones who work in consulting and in finance, in marketing and in strategy, the ones who have launched that cool startup—

Image

Tube Mogul co-founders, Brett Wilson and John Hughes, both MBA 2007 from Haas, took first place in Haas’ business plan competition while students

—they become part of your Haas family, too. Steeped in the same values you hold, they are the kinds of people who will take your call. In any given year, over 500 alumni support the job search for current MBAs.

So, that’s a little about us (OK, more than a little). Now we’d love hear about you. What’s your background?  Where are you headed?  What are your interests? We hope you’ll take the time to tell us—and be sure to let us know how we can help.

Our Top 5 Suggestions for Getting to Know the Full-time Berk [#permalink] New post 01 Jul 2014, 09:00
FROM Haas Admissions Blog: Our Top 5 Suggestions for Getting to Know the Full-time Berkeley MBA
Right about now, your head is probably full of MBA buzzwords, like value proposition. Like innovative leadership. Like “FOMO.” What the heck is FOMO? Keep reading to find out!

As you embark on this exploration of MBA programs, a lot of things will become clear: Which school feels like the best fit. How to get really, really good at writing essays. And just what these MBA buzzwords mean exactly.

What you’re really doing, of course, is figuring out your future—the career options that most excite you, and which MBA program will get you where you want to go.

Welcome to this exciting time—when the possibilities seem endless, and possibly a bit overwhelming. We’d like to make the process easier; may we present our top 5 suggestions for getting to know our Full-time MBA Program:

1. Say hello in person

Admissions is coming to a city near you – join us! You’ll be rewarded with tips on the application process and insights from our students and alumni on what differentiates the Berkeley MBA. A calendar of global events, happening June through October, is being updated frequently. Join us for information sessions, MBA fairs, diversity events, and more. Check back often and register early.

 2. Take a trip to Berkeley

Spend a half-day with us on campus. Take in a class, connect with students, hear from admissions, and generally get a feel for life as a Berkeley MBA student. This is the best way to experience our distinctive culture. Campus visits are offered Monday to Thursday during the school year. Register in advance to secure your spot.

3. Meet us online, live

Can’t come to us? We’ll come to you, virtually that is. Be on the lookout for online chats about the application process and webinars delivered by students and faculty. Timing not good for you? We’ll post chat transcripts and webinar recordings shortly afterward. Or, browse our library of existing podcasts, including insights from Executive Director, Stephanie Fujii and Dean of School, Rich Lyons. On Facebook? So are we. Check out our admissions page where we share tips, answer FAQs and host contests – with cool prizes!

4. Get the inside scoop from students

You’ve got questions, they’ve got answers! Our Haas Student Ambassadors – the student arm of the admissions office —are eager to share their experiences with you. Email your questions to hsa@haas.berkeley.edu and they’ll get back to you within 48 hours. Also check out our video FAQs, with student responses to hot topics about the Berkeley MBA experience.

5. Browse at your leisure

Our website should probably be the first stop on your journey. Learn about our general management curriculum and applied learning opportunities. Explore our career resources and recent employment reports. Review our class profile and meet students from various backgrounds. And of course, browse the admission criteria and get started on your application!

We hope this helps you get started on your journey to learning about the Full-time MBA program at Haas. Bottom line, we hope you reach out and talk to us during this process. Tell us your story - we want to get to you know!  In addition to all the resources above, you can always reach us at mbaadm@haas.berkeley.edu or at . We hope our paths cross in the near future!

PS: “FOMO” is fear-of-missing-out, something it’s easy to feel in the MBA Program, with so many opportunities available at any given time. The good news—whatever you explore in your time as a student will broaden and enrich you in a meaningful way.
