A warning regarding LOR's
Spoke to the Adcom regarding me submitting an additional LOR - she said that they only look at TWO - an those are selected at random. Bottom line, whoever had registered three/four recommenders delete all but two - they do accept additional recos if you are waitlisted

I am trying to figure out the format for my cover letter. Looking for some opinions. Should I stick with the standard format
Date
Address
Dear, Mr X
All my wonderful content
Sincerely
RR
my address
Or just start with Dear, ignoring the addresses at the top and bottom.
Also are you counting all the words or just the words in the body of the text. 500 words is pretty tight so I dont want to waste 50 words with non-value added fluff.

river, your format looks fine. The 500 word limit is for the body of the letter. The addresses dont count towards the limit. Some one who is an ex-adcom at MIT told me this.

Are you guys including the question at the top of your essays or can the document contain the essays alone? With the question at top, my essays span 2 pages. I dont want ad-com to think I exceeded the limits too much.

Not necessary, but am doing it in the header......problem with MIT's essay topis is that they are so close that you can easily interchange some essays an topics......would rather not take a chance on that

I am not worried about my recs for MIT, just that my essays suck. They are so boring and there is no way to really make them very interesting. Also due to the nature of my job they are extremely generic. My one hope is that most of the applicants face the same problem with trying to answer horrible and insanely specific questions in 500 words.
At least I have examples for every essay...just nothing in 500 words that I can make sound very impressive.

river, I think everybody will face the same problems with the MIT essays. They are very specific and, at the same time, are very close to each other. Also, it is going to be very tough for everybody to keep these essays interesting (Considering how specific the essays are).

HBS and Stanford are shots in the dark for a lot of people...thats what MIT is for me. I am in no way happy with my essays but still am going to apply just because.
