i'm a little surprised as stern historically loses out to wharton/cbs (as we've already seen on this thread), and i would assume they would have more spots to fill off the WL.
i'm still on WL w/o interview and have heard nothing from them. i know from last year's thread that some ppl got cut in late august so... i'm hoping i get in, but i'm not holding my breath and will start working on my reapps soon.
Historically Columbia was above Stern and stable in the rankings. Now one is declining, the other is ascending.
Historically Wharton did not have noticeably miserable recruitment statistics. In 2009 it was significantly worse than many expected, their finance focus easy to filter out and show they were relatively worse off.
My understanding was that Stern expected a huge pick-up on yield from the US News, the new Dean and the whole change going on in the school. That was before the deposits came in, but there was a feeling (probably from deposits received then) that there would be a favorable bump in uptake on offers made to that point.
This is the risk that Round 3 applicants play. All schools will be long offers to places equal or above the class size azt that point. If uptake moves off forecast, they will not be able to take as many R3 candidates. Worse, Waitlist people (who could almost be considered alternates for offered places) find they are less likely to get pulled through.
i agree that it seems like general opinion is that columbia and wharton are "trending down", particularly due to their traditional strength in finance and the ongoing crisis in that area.. and esp. with nyu's new dean publicly stating his desire and intention to change stern's reputation so that it will be known as more than just a finance school, that stern seems to be trending up. (with one of the new rankings having nyu and cbs tied for 9th as evidence)
BUT.. I think it will take a lot more time for this to actually have a lasting impact. in the minds of most ppl (obviously just my own opinion), it seems like most still hold CBS in higher regard and definitely wharton, and i have a hard time imagining ppl choosing stern over cbs/wharton at this point.
this forum is a small sample size, but i've already read many posts where ppl are choosing wharton over cbs, and cbs over stern (as usual) and not a single one where they chose nyu first.
i met current students at a campus visit, and although all of them said they are glad they chose nyu and they would choose nyu over cbs, none of them had actually got into both (and many admitted at the time cbs was their first choice).
my main point is that, i would expect the yield's to not change that much in one year. what IS surprising is that it doesn't seem like a single person has heard word from the WL so far.
