If you look at the threads from last year, you'll see that sometimes applications will be reviewed before November 15th, and some of the early applications received early interview invitations as well. But that is not always the case. So, practical advice: submit whenever you're ready, by the deadline.

And yes, application review is random but notifications are made on a rolling basis. Usually the first interview invitations come out mid-December and the first decisions begin to be released sometime mid-January.

gkumar wrote:
So is there any incentive for us to submit before November 15th? From the above message, is it safe to assume that we should use all of our time to make sure the application is the best it can be and submit by November 15th?

If you mean classic CPG marketing, I don't think any of the ones that came to Stern hire internationals full-time. I could be mistaken. However, pharmaceutical companies (Pfizer, BMS etc) hire international students into marketing at non-US locations. Others like American Express and companies, especially in travel and hospitality, will hire and sponsor international students for *some* positions.

So your options are limited if you are not a US resident and interested in marketing, but they're not non-existent either.

Internships however aren't a problem. But you need to be aware that spending a summer in marketing at Kraft, Colgate, L'Oreal, Hermes, or Unilever etc. may not necessarily lead to a full-time offer if you're international.

gijoedude wrote:
But can you please answer a question of mine? How open are these companies to internationals? I know banks and consulting companies easily sponsor H1B if needed, but what about these marketing companies? Do they prefer citizens/PR?

Thanks for the feedback. This is the challenge that most international student will have to face when they look for job opportunities in the US, if they are not considering consulting or finance. I know a few people who are fellow Canadians, did their MBA and got jobs in the US that is not finance and consulting, I guess just need to work extra hard.
Or maybe I should just marry one of my classmates, lol, get that green card, lol....

I currently work in CPG, but in a finance role and I am very familiar with the type of work CPG marketing does, so hopefully this helps.

You guys are overthinking this. There are LOTS of people in both the MBA1 and MBA2 classes who visited NYU Stern for the first time on the day of their admissions interview(s). Actually visiting the school is by no means a prerequisite for admission!

Stern's yield is actually slightly higher than 60% and almost exactly the same as that of schools like Booth and Kellogg.

Its been a while since I contributed here, so I thought I would offer some help.
If any of you are not going to be able to make it to campus before you submit your application, but would like to still show strong interest in the school, I would be happy to chat with you. You could then mentioned that you reached out to a student to find out what the culture was like.

PM me if you are interested in chatting (things are a little hectic, so give me some time to respond)

I also want to throw in some feedback on Stern and Columbia. After visiting both schools (among others) I noticed that Stern has a lot more security. Being in downtown Manhattan (is that the proper terminology?) I expected there to be security. It was a little bit different from other schools. You could not get into many of the buildings without an NYU ID as there were guards and gates at every entrance. Visitors had to sign in at the security desk or be brought in as a guest. This could be a plus or a minus for people.

plus: you are more safe, no crazy's from the street (or just solicitors)... or
minus: hassle to check in guests when they visit, the area might actually be less safe.

At Columbia (and other schools I visited), I was able to roam pretty freely around campus walking into the different academic buildings, libraries, etc with ease. I still felt safe at Columbia, but it was during the day. Not sure at night though as it is right next to Harlem.

I still like NYU and didn't find it to be a hassle or to be less safe. Just something that was dramatically different and stood out for me.

Anyone else notice this?

i thought nyu had a rolling admissions process... but i guess that doesnt start until round 1 deadline has passed? could someone chime in on this? thx

See page 5/6 of this thread for discussion of this. Here's the short answer:

w103psp wrote:
I emailed and asked adcom for clarification regarding rolling admissions and here is the answer:

We understand that sorting out the different schools’ processes can be confusing. At Stern, we typically do not begin reviewing applications or sending application acknowledgments until the first (November 15th) deadline. Once we begin reviewing applications, notifications are rolling, meaning that the applicant could receive a notification at any time. If the application was complete and submitted on or before the deadline, the applicant will receive notification on or any time before the notification date for that deadline. If the application is incomplete, we cannot guarantee that applicants will be notified by the notification deadline.

One idea I rejected was making a jigsaw puzzle of some sort that they'd have to put together w/ images of my life with 1 piece missing and then have a note (within the puzzle) that said "the missing piece of me is NYU Stern!" or something cheezy like that.

I decided not to do it simply because it would be a pain for both me to put together and for the Stern adcoms to assemble, and lets face it, its pretty cheezy.

I apologize if this has already been asked.

Do the essays have to answer the question in the same order that the question is asked or can I start with part (c) if it's the most effective way to answer part (a)?

Hey rouzbie, I was wondering the same thing. I ended up writing my essay in order (a, b, c) after reading Stacy Blackman's post (Google "stacy blackman nyu stern tuesday tips"). I think what she says makes chronological sense, so I began my essay with a short preview of my lifelong motivations/goals, and then talked about my past choices (academic and professionally), why an MBA and then short- and long-term goals.

Also, Columbia's essay prompt is similar, but in reverse (goals, then why an MBA at Columbia), so NYU might also be wary about students copying over their Columbia essay to apply to NYU. Doing it in the order of NYU's essay prompt might help alleviate that potential concern on NYU's part.

IMO, you should answer in the way that results in the best flow given your particular story. Another consultant has this advice:

mbaMission wrote:
We actually recommend a past, future, present sequence for this essay, because in this case, the most logical approach is to first give context and background about yourself, next describe your goals and then explain why you need the particular school’s resources to achieve those goals. Convincingly explaining why a school’s resources are required to help you achieve your goals would be quite challenging if you have not first stated what those goals are.

This is the approach I have taken.

I had my interview earlier today. The admissions office gave me a t-shirt and a folder containing some information on my post MBA career path and clubs I mentioned in my application. Like the folder, the interview was tailored to my application materials. I won't get into specific questions (you can use ClearAdmitWiki), but I would tell you to review your essays and know your story well. Go over the questions you have already asked yourself 100 times - why MBA, why Stern, what clubs do you want to participate in, how will you reach your career goals, etc. Also, know your professional/personal strengths and what you will bring to Stern.

Overall, the experience was very pleasant. For those of you that haven't visited Stern yet, the admissions staff is very nice and welcoming. The interview was 1-on-1 for about 35-40 minutes. I had a chance to ask some questions at the end, so prepare a couple. If anyone wants more info, PM me.

I second what CPA said. My experience was very plesant as well. All admission office staff are very friendly. You pretty much need to know the Why's and prepare for a few questions. Mine was about 30-35min long. However, I had a 2 on 1 (which was kind of unexpected). One of the admission officers was supposed to be in training and didn't ask anything. There were no pressure or tricky questions.

According to my interviewer, the interviews started sometimes last week. Looking at the available time slots, there are plenty of empty slots. We are supposed to hear back no longer than 3 weeks.
