Fantastic - it's always nice to meet (even virtually) a fellow wolverine. I hope you continue making your donations to the sports program here. As we try to rebuild the football team over the next few years, the university could really use the $$$

cgeorgan1 wrote:
As I believe I'm speaking to an international applicant, you should realize that there is a significant portion of the State of Michigan who believes that the resources of our state should be primarily focused on residents of the state. It is the reason why, many years ago, the percentage of in-state vs. out-of-state admissions to the undergraduate program were capped at 2/3 vs. 1/3, to ensure that "higher paying" out of state students did not displace in-state residents.

I am aware that The University of Michigan is funded largely from its own endowment (I believe that the amount of state funding amounts to roughly 5% of their total operating budget). However, that does not change the character of the institution.

Absolutely agree. Despite the fact that the State of Michigan funds only about 6.8% of the University's operating expenses, Michigan is and probably will remain for the foreseeable future a public university. I think that there are pros and cons to both higher education models - public and private, but that is a discussion we can (and should) have outside of the context of this particular thread. But I would like to make something clear to ensure there is no confusion - while the character of the university at large is public, I can definitely say that that does not extend to Ross. Ross has no restrictions on how many applicants of each race, color, creed, gender, socio-economic status, ethnicity it has to admit. That is not going to change.

cgeorgan1 wrote:
I, for one, would like to see more in-state admissions from the school regardless. A recent article in the Michigan Daily (suggested reading for many of you hopefuls out there), titled "Stay Maize and Blue" encouraged graduate programs at the University to reach out to current and former students of the institution (Here's a link to the article).

I am genuinely interested in reading this and understanding the author's perspective on how this will benefit the University. It would be great if you could post a working URL. That said, I disagree that there should be more in-state students just for the sake of having more in-state students. The biggest benefit of going to business school is the network you build there. If 50% of the class consisted of Michiganders who want to stay in Michigan after they graduate, that makes the other 50% (who want to do things outside of Michigan) less enthusiastic about the program. In the long run, this will lead to a situation where the only people who want to study here will be from Michigan, and will want to stay here in Michigan. There's nothing wrong with the people from Michigan - actually, some of the smartest and nicest folks I have met during my stay here at Ann Arbor are from the state of Michigan. But creating application "quotas" is a recipe for disaster. Michigan needs to have a diverse network - VCs in the coast cities, bankers in NY, consultants in Chicago, government folks in DC, and entrepreneurs, managers and businessmen in Michigan. Arguably, for a business school to have impact on society it needs its graduates to go where businesses were, are and will be – without restriction. That makes for a positive reenforcing cycle where these successful alums improve the brand of the school, which consequently leads to higher quality applicants (and students).

cgeorgan1 wrote:
This encourages people, such as myself (a long time resident of the State) to stay within the State of Michigan to help rebuild what has become an ailing economy. I would much rather see graduates of the University of Michigan remain to help re-build what was once a predominately automotive economy into a more generalized industrial economy - rather than see (honestly) international students apply to the school so that they can go off to 57th and Lexington in search of an analyst position at Big-Box-Capital-Management...something a fairly large percentage of current graduates do.

I think you have a fantastic goal, and hope you achieve it. Just so you know, over the years I have been here (3 because of the dual degree), I am seeing an increase in the number of Ross graduates electing to stay in Michigan after school. Some are going to big consulting firms, one set up his own VC fund, some others are going to work for startups in the Ann Arbor area and some are going into traditional industry - auto and other manufacturing. I think Ross has a very balanced recruiting profile that is not unduly skewed towards any particular industry or a particular geography (e.g. financial services is 16% of the graduating class - and that includes investment banking).

To summarize - I want to say that Michigan's diversity in terms of geographic hitting power and industry/function reach is one of its assets. While a lot of other schools are skewed (to varying degrees of course) in one or more of the above criteria, Michigan has managed to keep its wide reach and stay close to its goal - to build businessmen and leaders. I can see that you love Michigan dearly, and sincerely hope it all works out for you.

Just wanted to post a nice picture I took this morning of the main campus. You can see the Ross School in the background.

FYI, Michigan hasn't canceled classes since 1978.

I grew up about 25 miles from Ann Arbor, and spent a significant amount of time living near Raleigh-Durham. Just to be fair to Duke, Durham isn't considered to be the nicest of college towns, but Chapel Hill, home to University of North Carolina, is a classic American college town and only about 10 miles away. Chapel Hill is #40 on that list.

It really depends what you're looking for. Duke is a smaller, more insular campus, while Michigan's campus feels more like a part of the town. Personally, I like Michigan's better. However, the overall area in North Carolina is probably nicer, mostly because Raleigh isn't anywhere near as bad as Detroit, and it doesn't snow there most years, which may be a plus for you.

I just finished a campus visit and interview at Ross. The new building is VERY impressive (it's amazing what $100M US will get you these days!) On the tour Ross students kept coming up to us and introducing themselves, sharing their experiences, offering contact info, etc. Everyone was SO friendly and outgoing and It just seemed like everyone was so happy to be there. Very friendly atmosphere.
My actual interview conducted by a second year was completely laid back. I was a little shocked that he didn't take one single note the whole time we met. There was not a pen or pad to be found in the room! We were truly just having a conversation. It makes me wonder how Ross intends to use the interview in the selection process.
Overall I was very impressed with the program, particularly with the students. My takeaway of Ross is that you will love it if you thrive in a highly social, team oriented atmosphere, while those who prefer to do things alone, though they may be very smart, will struggle in that kind of an environment.

For those who are interested, Ross just named its new dean. Email from Provost Phil Hanlon follows.

Quote:
Dear Ross School student,

In review and discussion with the Board of Regents’ Personnel, Compensation and Governance Committee, and pending Regents’ approval, President Mary Sue Coleman and I are pleased to announce the appointment of Alison Davis-Blake as the next Edward J. Frey Dean at the Stephen M. Ross School Business, effective August 22, 2011. She will also be appointed Professor of Management and Organizations.

Since 2006 Dr. Davis-Blake has been dean of the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. The Carlson School has thrived under her leadership through major expansions in facilities and undergraduate enrollments, revamping of undergraduate and MBA curricula, development of innovative cross-college degree programs and notable success in fundraising and development activities.

In 1990, Dr. Davis-Blake joined the Graduate School of Business at the University of Texas at Austin, later named the McCombs School of Business, as an assistant professor of management. She rose through the ranks to become chair of the Department of Management from 2002-2003 and senior associate dean for academic affairs from 2003-2006. In 1995 she was named the Eleanor T. Mosle Fellow and in 2004, the Eddy C. Scurlock Centennial Professor of Management. In 1995, she co-founded the executive master’s degree in human resource development leadership at the McCombs School and continued to co-direct it until 2001. Prior to her time at the University of Texas, Dr. Davis-Blake was an assistant professor of industrial administration at Carnegie Mellon University.

Dr. Davis-Blake received both a B.S. degree in economics, summa cum laude with highest honors, in 1979, and a M.O.B. degree in organizational behavior in 1982 from Brigham Young University. She received a Ph.D. degree in organizational behavior from Stanford University in 1986.

The focus of Alison Davis-Blake’s research, teaching and consulting is human resources strategy. She is an expert in outsourcing arrangements and organizational employment practices such as the use of temporary and contract workers and the design of organizational salary structures. Her professional service includes editorial positions with both the Academy of Management Review and Administrative Science Quarterly.

The Ross School of Business is a source of great pride for the University of Michigan. With the recent Ross naming gift the School has been transformed to a new level under the leadership of Dean Bob Dolan. The world-class facilities provide state of the art classrooms and meeting spaces for its excellent faculty and students. The Ross School’s distinctive action-based learning approach to the MBA program serves as a model for other top business schools.

Dr. Davis-Blake brings to the University of Michigan’s Ross School the experience and intellect to lead the School’s community to a shared vision building on the School’s success. Her passion will help steer faculty, students, and staff along their charted course to achieving that vision.

President Coleman and I are extremely pleased that Alison Davis-Blake is assuming the helm of the Stephen M. Ross School of Business at this time of dramatic change within business education and practice. We are confident that she will provide outstanding leadership for the Ross School, increasing its international presence as well as delivering innovative education for our graduates who will work in a global economy. We expect she will build on the School’s reputation of excellence to enhance its connections within the University and the larger community.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my appreciation to Gerald F. Davis, who chaired the search advisory committee, and to the committee members for their outstanding service.

For those of you who wish to congratulate Dr. Davis-Blake, her email address is davi1273@umn.edu. There will also be an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to meet Dr. Davis-Blake at a reception on Tuesday, February 15 from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. in the Davidson Winter Garden. If you need any additional information, please let me know.

Yours truly,

Phil Hanlon
Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs

With his verbal skills, he doesn't have to submit an application.

He is like GMAT Chuck Norris: any adcom site automatically reports him as "admitted" when he surfs anywhere near the login page.

Good Morning Everyone

I am posting this comment to try to help my friend. You see, I have a friend who religiously checks this forum to the point that it is a disease. I have decided to call the disease "Forumitis" - it is when you check the forums and constantly hit refresh over and over and over again. To you help everyone recognize this disease, here are some of the symptoms:

- Making statements referring to refreshing the boards
- Making arguments and statements beginning with "looks like some ppl..." or "the boards said..."
- Loss of productivity at work
- General lack of hygiene
- Staying in on Friday and Saturday night to hang out with friends from the board
- Even hitting refresh while on the toilet
- Or flat out denying they have a problem

The best way to combat this is to recognize it early and sent them to therapist to get help. How do I know all this, it is because I suffered this in the ED phase. Now that R2 is coming up, I am starting to see other people suffer from this. So, please if you yourself is suffering from this or you know someone who is, please get them help. Please feel free to PM me if you need extra advice. Remember, its normal to check it a few times a day, but hitting refresh is not OK. I just hope this message reaches my friend before its to late.

Good Luck to everyone.

PS this will be re-posted on the Booth board because I know this person is there too

Just got an email from the adcom:

Ross Admissions recently sent all of its Round 2 applicants an email detailing how candidates can access their admissions decision on March 8th. It has come to our attention that a system error allowed you and a very small number of other candidates to view preliminary admissions decisions. This was inadvertent, and the final admissions decision will be made available on March 8th at 4 PM (EST). We apologize for the confusion, and thank you for your continued interest in the Ross School of Business.

Ok folks - good news and bad news.

Bad News: I guess most people know this by now - this is not a hoax. Some people were able to see their decisions due a glitch on the website, and yes - a follow up email was sent out yesterday.

Good News: This "glitch" only affected a very very small number of applicants. So for those of you who did not see that (infamous) link, no reason to lose hope just yet.

I wish I could have gotten back to you earlier - I replied as soon as I heard...

No news on the calls front yet. But I did recieve this piece of information today, relevant for international students.

Quote:

I hope you’re having a wonderful break!

The Ross School of Business is pleased to announce that a no-cosigner loan for international students will be available for incoming Full-time MBA students. The interest rate will be variable at prime + 3.50%, with a 6% guarantee fee. The loan application will be available on July 1, 2011. Further details will be available on the Ross Financial Aid website <http://www.bus.umich.edu/Admissions/FinancialAid/NoCoSignLoan.htm> in April.

From what I know, this is definitely one of the better loan options offered to international students in US Business schools.

People - it's obvious that Yeltzina gets off by pushing other people's buttons. And it's obvious that he/she can create another account if the mods block the ones he/she is currently using.

So, best way out - ignore any posts that are derogatory, or flat out outlandish. I know this is a stressful time for all of us, but let's take the high road and ignore these purposely provocative posts. I think it's amazing how the quality of discussions here has not deteriorated to BW-isque standards, and that speaks very highly of the quality of members we have on this board. Let's keep it that way.

@Nink: Thanks for sharing the information with the board.

P.S: I'll try to see if I can find something out about the calls today...

This speculation about links, financial aid or glitch will not do anything for any of us. It is best to just do two things. Either wait for your call or wait for an e-mail. Whether you speculate about any links or not, a decision has been made and nothing is going to change that. So I will say folks, relax and hope for the best and stop this questions of check one link or another site. You are only going to work yourself up and then what...? You get a ding, are you going to kill yourself, or you get on the waitlist and then you are back again on the forum asking questions of what to do to get off that waitlist. If you get admitted of course that is good, then you have to worry about background checks and other questions again.....so folks, getting an admission is not the end of the journey, and then when you get into the school, it is another time to focus on classes, getting an internship, networking, business school activities...etc... So folks, relax, stop the speculations and just hope for the best...

P.S. I am waiting to get into a business school as well but I don't believe it should be a do or die affair anyways...just saying....

Do you have the link?

You have no idea how bad I want to go to Booth, but the #s are looking even more bleak over in that thread (read: marginal chance). Most likely I will retake the GMAT and try next year but I wish I knew better on what to focus on improving besides that obvious data point. Cannot believe I didn't get into Ross, cannot believe I didn't even get an interview at W, but I guess that is how things work out.

Everybody keep your head up! No whining. Emotional resiliency is a key attribute to success in my opinion. With the exception of the last 48 hour debacle (decision link/no link; financial aid link/no link) in which we've all gone mad, we're doing okay.

It is my opinion that the weekend is important from the standpoint of creating a connection to the school and a one stop shop for getting things taken care of if you didn't visit like understanding where you can live, seeing the building and talking to financial aid reps in person. I do not think the world will end if you cannot go, but I would arrive in Ann Arbor a week or so earlier than others to get all of these things squared away if you are unable to do so from afar.
