I'll also be starting at Ross this fall, would be happy to help out as well. I was also admitted off the waitlist so I can share experiences related to that.

Ross students,
in your opinion, can the case for this essay be dated at 2000-2002 or it's too old?

Describe a personal challenge or obstacle and why you view it as such. How have you dealt with it? What have you learned from it?

I don't think there are any hard and fast rules regarding the matter, but the more recent the event, the better. I'd say within the last 3-4 years is safe.

However, if the event was so significant that it dramatically affected the way you live, think, or view the world, then I say go for it!

In for round 1.

On a different note, any other males get an e-mail about a "Value of an MBA for women" event? Honestly, I would like to go, but I think they're confused by my name.

I believe the email went out to everybody who has registered on Ross's website at any time in the past. And I certainly don't think this is a women only event.

Thanks rpratt620 and mreevit for offering help! its much appreciated (and needed!!) Right now, I'm assessing the strength of my profile and researching essays.

My first question to you is- I've heard (from previous applicants) that Ross places more emphasis on gpa than it does on GMAT. is that correct?

I'm disinclined to believe that Ross places more emphasis on GPA than GMAT. I know plenty of guys/girls that got into Ross with strong-decent GMAT scores and modest-weak GPA's. When it comes to weighing the GPA/GMAT in the application process, I would say that adcom is looking for ways to let you in. Ultimately it comes down to who you are as a person, your experiences, your essays--are they compelling? Are you the type of person that Ross feels will add to the class? etc... If you have these things going for you, the next thing adcom is going to look for is intellectual and quantitative horsepower. That's where GPA/GMAT come in. If you are NOT an interesting person and are indistinguishable from other candidates then you are going to need like a 3.5+ and 730+ to really have a shot, and still it'll be a crapshoot. But, if you are someone they really want then they'll let you prove your smarts through either your GPA, GMAT or both.

So, in short this whole application process is a sliding scale. You can overcome one weakness in one area by being particularly strong in another. Of course there comes a point where you cannot compensate (i.e. <2.0GPA and <600 GMAT are going to be exceptionally tough to overcome)
Get the best GMAT you can (This is especially important if you plan on going into I-banking & Consulting - top firms in those industries are looking for strong GMAT scores when you apply, 700 is often a baseline but certainly people have gotten jobs with lower) and then focus all your attention and effort to crafting STRONG application essays.
