My essays were slightly above the word limit. Frankly put, the adcoms are not going to be putting every application through a wordcount. What they will be doing though, is reading applications over and over so they at least have a general sense of how long 1800 words is. Thus, I employed the eyeball test:
Randomly lop off the end of your essay to get a sense of what a "True 1800 Word Essay" would look like. Then add back your sentences. If it's noticeably longer, then keep cutting. If it's just a matter of 1-2 lines, then chances are nobody will care or notice.
