Is Carnegie Mellon known as an engineering school or computer science school?

Good question. I'm going to say both.

My friend just graduated with a JD/MBA from a let's be kind and say 3rd tier school. He didn't do anything spectacular in school. His standardized scores were LSAT 73%, GMAT 92%. He just landed a gig at a top firm for over $150k based on his CMU engineering degree and experience at Apple.

So, CMU is a very powerful brand.

CMU definitely has a strong engineering rep...but its comp sci is beyond strong. It and MIT are like the HBS and Stanford of comp sci. If you are going to double major with a masters in comp sci and an MBA and plan to go into high tech. CMU is about as good a place to go as any because its rep in those fields.

60% of the class has a science/engineering major. I'm not sure how to read this.

Do they prefer these majors or are the majority of the applicants from these majors?

Like some schools with very strong reputations in certain industries, CMU's reputation with engineers and computer folks tends to attract those people more than other. Its the self selection, if you are an engineer/IT and plan to return to that industry in a management roll, then CMU is a great school...probably one of the stronger school outside of the top 10 in those fields.

Why does Tepper have to make their appication so difficult?

I'm filling out my employment and they make you write everything down on word documents. Why not make it easier for applicants and have them write it down on the actual online application so it's clear if any info is left out.

What a pain in the booty...

My rant for the day.

True. But once you prepare the list in Word doc, it can be helpful in other applications. It was helpful for me in 2 other applications.

I got an e-mail asking me to schedule an interview. Has anyone else already interviewed with Tepper? Any tips would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Lasted less than 30 mins.
Good luck !

Does Tepper give out decisions ahead of the Dec 15th deadline ??

Thanks sperinko! I am probably going to travel up there middle of November. On one the chats, I remember an AdCom member saying that CMU gives out acceptances as soon as they feel comfortable with accepting you. You have 6-8 weeks to accept so be careful with the Round 2 applications.

Just meant that if there is a school you really want to go to in Round 2, you should have applied in Round 1. I have a friend who was in this situation last year and lost his deposit ($2500). Some schools don't give you much time to accept the offer of admission.

WTH is Crisis?

Did you ask for clarification?

How did you respond?

That was not in my Tepper interiew..it was in ISB.
I was asked to talk about "crisis" for one minute...no clarifications...I described crisis as it meant for me (as a leader).

Why do you think they asked you that question?

It seems like complete waste of time. Maybe they wanted to see if you would stumble over a question you had not prepared for?
