How's Tepper's reputation overall? It seems there's not many people who apply to it. Is it a second-rated school? I simply want to ask because I am considering applying to it. I know it is very strong in engineering but I am not sure about its MBA program...
Thanks...
Reputation wise it is behind other top 20 schools like Darden and Cornell. It is very quant focused, drawing from it's strong engineering program. After visiting the campus and talking to students, I felt it is a very nerdy school compared to other MBA programs.
For me personally, I do not want to spend 2 years in a dingy cold steel town taking very quant focused courses, so I decided to not attend it even if I do get in in round 2. Also, it does not place very well in IB which I am interested in.
But there are a lot of people who like that kind of atmosphere. Just make sure your math skills Probability and stats) are very strong, because most of the MBA students there have science background and if you want to be on top of the class, be prepared to compete with them and excel. Good luck!
Tepper has always been perceived as a top 20 school; however, I feel that it's small size and location prevent it from being ranked much higher than 15. It is clearly known as a quant/tech program, but I also think that this is a common stereotype (especially among people on these forums) and that not all Tepper students actually feel this way. In fact, more than half of those who graduate from Tepper go into finance or consulting, and not technology. Below is the BW breakdown:
Consulting: 20 %
Finance/Accounting: 37 %
General Management: 10 %
Human Resources: 1 %
Marketing/Sales: 19 %
Management Information Systems (MIS): 5 %
Operations/Logistics: 8 %
I'd be curious to know what percentage of these finance/consulting positions are technology based. In terms of investment banking, Tepper seems to only place 5-10 students per year max. I think it would be inaccurate to automatically dismiss this as a small percentage without knowing the percentage of students initially pursuing ibanking at Tepper. However, after speaking to the career center I did find out that Tepper does have strong placement in corporate finance, which could always be a contingency plan if ibanking doesn't work out.
It would be very helpful if there was a Tepper student or alumnus who might be able provide his or her impressions.
