Don't over think about it. It's just a random student writing his opinion about something. It's as representative as I am.

Some words from HBS about the "million $$$ mystery" (a.k.a the interview)

The important excerpts:
HBS Admission Blog wrote:
1. Every candidate who is ultimately offered admission to HBS is required to have an interview — the vast majority of these will be conducted by members of the Admissions Board in person.

2. We conduct interviews on campus and will also be traveling to London, Paris, Mumbai, Delhi, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston and possibly Austin and Seattle this year in Round One.

3. In situations where a face-to-face interview is impossible to schedule, the Admissions Board conducts phone interviews.

4. We will be interviewing from November 5 up until notification day, January 16 (and beyond if we need to). To repeat, there will always be a number of interview invitations issued up to and including January 16.

5. I think we will begin sending interview invitations during the week of October 22.

6. There is absolutely no discernible pattern to how/when interview invitations are issued.

7. if you call, Sally will say the same thing that I've written here.

This is a follow up to KingKREEP's post, Stolen from elsewhere on the web...courtesy Sandy from BW. I know most of us also visit BW, but I thought this was good info worth reproducing in full.

We will be interviewing from November 5 up until notification day, January 16 (and beyond if we need to).I think we will begin sending interview invitations during the week of October 22.

this is the normal prior gap between end of applications and first invites: about 20 days. That is what the gap sorta was in year's prior. The invites pulse out in sort of a bell curve, OVER THE NEXT 30-40 DAYS, so if you have not received an invite by Decemeber 1, your chances of getting an invite are less than 5 percent.

if you are totally parnoid, you can plot your odds, by subtracting 3.2 percent every day, altho obviously if you dont hear fr. Oct 22-29 you have not lost 21percent, since invites get thicker, cresting around November 8-14 is my guess, it is not a symmetrical bell curve, it falls off faster after Nov 8-10, than it rises. Sorry for any stats boo-boos but hope you get the idea.

We will be interviewing from November 5 up until notification day, January 16 (and beyond if we need to).

This is true, but needs a footnote. They do interview and send out interview invites outside the 90-95 percent window of Oct20-Nov 23rd--but dont count on that being you. If you have not gotten an interview invite by Thanksgiving, things are looking real grim. Exceptions: you get on WL on decision day, and get interviewed later (that is maybe, duh, ~10 kids a year out of class of 1000, maybe less) or your letter on decision day is an interview invite (sell that on E-bay dude, it is very rare).

There is absolutely no discernible pattern to how/when interview invitations are issued.

hmmmmm, this is mostly true, BUT for interview invites for HUB cities--this year first round that means -- London, Paris, Mumbai, Delhi, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Dallas, Houston and possibly Austin and Seattle -- do in fact go out in pulses and patterns, and if you live in SF and you find out that SF hub interview is going to be e.g. on November 16th, well, duh, a lot of SF invites will go going out 6-10 days prior to that, and if you miss that window, it aint good, altho you are still alive. You can get a later invite on campus, or an alum interview, etc. but NOT GOOD.

to repeat, there will always be a number of interview invitations issued up to and including January 16.

to repeat, there will always be a number of six-leaf clovers, flying pigs, and POWER BALL lottery winners.

I just visited HBS yesterday.
What an experience: the campus, the people, and the class.
It was an overwhelming experience. It would be nice if I can be a part of it. =) =) =)

The on-campus interview happens... well...on campus. And it's usually conducted by an officer of Ad-Com or a second year student.

The hub interviews happen in certain major cities around the world. They are usually conducted by officers of Ad-Com or in certain cases, alumni. You are unlikely to find 2nd years at these interviews.

Dude, if I get an invite, I will crawl on my hands and knees to get there, no matter where in the world it is held.

I just realized I never added my name here.

I succumbed to the Harvard charm and am applying R2. Decided when I found myself writing an essay even before I had decided to apply. I like short essays :)

Is it any real difference between applying in R1 and R2? Some of my friends applying to top school in R2, including Harvard, and got dinged everywhere. In the following years, they applying in R1 and got interviewed. Half of them accepted at their 1st choice.

Just curious.

Quick question:

Am I the only person who routinely logs into ApplyYourself even though I should be waiting for an email? :)

1. KK signs into GMail.
2. KK sees a mail from admissions@mba.com
3. KK remembers that the HBS interview invites start going out today
4. KK is suddenly extremely excited
5. KK opens the mail.
6. Mail says, "Thank you for your interest in the HBS program. Please be advised......"" and basically answers a question that KK had asked.

This app process is really getting to me. You guys have no idea what this is doing to my heart rate... Hey!! Smilies work!!!! Smilies work!!! Woohoooo! :-D
