Looks like it's that time of the year again. After several years of thinking about the MBA, I'm finally applying this year. I've been checking out schools and recently visited HBS (military prospective students day), MIT, and Wharton. Where's everyone applying to this year?

If there are any military out there interested in Wharton (or really any school for that matter) feel free to send me a PM.

I applied to HBS (Waitlisted)/Wharton and got into Wharton with a fellowship (which is where I will be attending this fall). I was also in the midst of applying to Columbia/Sloan but once I got into Wharton, I put a hold on everything else (also started to burn out!). I'm currently an O-3 in the Army (Infantry) and have about 3 more months left, my job is fairly relaxed as we got back from deployment less than a year ago. If any of you have questions about Releasing from Active Duty, The G.I. Bill, VA Benefits, the GMAT, schools, anything!; I spent a long time researching, so I could hopefully make it much easier for you.

Just shoot me a PM, and I can give you my personal e-mail or phone number.

Kicking it off early, I like it. I'm chomping at the bit to start knocking out these applications. I was also at the HBS Prospective Military Student's Day, maybe we met?

Maybe... where you stationed? By the way, are you going to use a consultant?

Not planning on it. I visited all the schools I plan on applying to and made contact with the Vets Club at each school. Everybody I met was more than willing to give me advice on the applications.

Good news for those of us who are eligible. GI Bill rate going up to over $19,000 next school year.

Zarthul - congrats on the Wharton admit! Did you end up using a consultant?

I applied to HBS, Wharton, Tuck and Darden Round 1 last year. I'm a state school OCS guy and I'm not a special forces/seal type. Dream came true - got into HBS. I'll be happy to help out - PM me. I had a lot of help including a consultant that just launched a new startup. They are pretty military friendly and are offering some pretty good discounts.

Best of luck to you all!

Kellogg waived it as well... "The Kellogg School will grant an application fee waiver for active duty U.S. military applicants or U.S. military veterans who have been on active duty within three years of applying." Scroll down to the very bottom.

Duke waives the fee for active duty military veterans. H/S won't, and neither will most other top schools. There's a few others that do a bit further down the rankings - Georgetown is one and I'm sure there are others.

As far as the fee waivers - I only had to pay at HBS. Fee waived at Wharton, Tuck, and Darden. I know for a fact that MIT waives as well.

Thanks- for the fee waiver at Wharton, did you have to e-mail the admissions office or was there an option within the application to indicate that you are military?

I'm starting to feel sick because of the lack of enlisted folks at top programs. Starting to realize all the favoritism for veterans is geared towards the commissioned side

hi,

This question I think will be of use to a lot of Infantry company commanders and may be also to others.

As Infantry company commanders, we organize a lot of sports teams with the company commander usually the team captain. The teams participate in a the inter-company competition and some companies win. How does one show this ?? The battalion gives no award. Unlike the corporate world where even a pat on the back is recorded by certificates in awards and where team leaders distribute awards around to keep the morale high, the awards in the army are quite difficult to come by. You might have led a company to come first in all competitions in battalion, won the inter company annual championship making your company the champion and what you get is a flag that you can hoist in front of your company for a year that you have to pass on to the next company and no certificate for the same.

Let me enumerate by one more example. Say you are a great firer. you went to the division level firing competition did well and got selected for corps level firing competition. Now everyone who has been in military would agree that getting selected in division as only officer to represent in corps level firing is a huge achievement. Say you didn't do well in corps and then returned back to unit. You get no certificates. So years later when the sharpshooter applies for B-school he cant site this in awards and achievements while something much smaller scle with a shiny name is projected by applicants from the corporate world.

So in spite of leading companies in an array of competitions and excelling in them what one projects in B-school apps is only their service medals which I think is the highest form of underselling. As military officers we do a lot of things and just because certificate are not distributed in military like polio vaccination, we lose out on awards and activities section of the application. once any adcom sees a list of 15-20 awards in a 5 year stint of a corporate employee and 5-6 in a military applicant the opinion starts going against the military applicant. More so in top-10 schools since they get a lot of shooting star applicants who can produce a laundry list of awards which if one goes into depth mean actually nothing.
Any experienced veteran has any idea how to address the issue??

I am sorry if people feel I have been rambling but i wanted anybody who reads this to understand what exactly I mean to convey.

If this has been addressed before I am sorry to repost and this post maybe deleted and I may be directed to the appropriate post.

NOTE: all above examples are purely generic and have no resemblance to any officer's profile( or slight resemblance to everybody's profile)

Well, I finally got my battalion commander on board with my REFRAD but have been told that the brigade commander is going to recommend disapproval (he thinks I want to get out of deploying with them). Anyone have any insight on what HRC might override him and approve anyway? This is all a whole bunch of nonsense to me since I've completed my obligation and just want to begin the next chapter. Advice from other vets?

A misconception is that your Brigade Commander has to approve your ETS. This is simply untrue. He has to counsel you on your options. Other than that, he (legally) doesn't have power over whether you get out or stay in. Stop-loss was ended years ago. Make a lot of noise if you have to because it's your career, your decision.

In case anyone is interested in Brand Management, here's the link to P&G's 2013 summer Brand Camp July 21-26:
http://us.experiencepg.com/home/marketing_mba_summer_camp.html

Seeing as how I'll be on separation leave from May-July 2013, this looks like a more productive way to spend a week instead of watching cartoons in my underwear.
