That's interesting that you were told that. All my interviewer told me was that notification would be on 1 February, not anytime before then. I don't recall anything about the method they would notify us by.
Looking at last years thread, it seems people were notified by both phone and email. I'm personally a fan of either email or an Apply Yourself status update - prevents us having to deal with waiting expectantly on a phone call, especially since this is my first potential acceptance.
