I was only able to catch some of the chat, thus my request for the full transcript, but Pete did say that in past years, between 25-50% of the waitlisted applicants were admitted. He did qualify that statement that he expects it to be closer to 25 than 50 this year. Also, I think he also said that the quality of applicants is almost the same as last years.

After 2 dings in RD1, I'm trying to do what's in my power to get admitted. I have an interview this Thursday on-campus. For those who have already interviewed, does anyone have any advice (e.g. questions asked)? Need some help....

On the chat, they said that historically they admit about 25-50% off their waitlist. Considering the increase in applications, they expect it will be towards the lower number this year, but they did say that was mere speculation. Now I don't know what is typical for waitlist numbers, but they said in R1, they admitted about 150 people and have 110 confirmed on their waitlist. I was pretty surprised it was that high from just one round (that's almost 1/2 of their expected class), but they review the waitlist after each round and either keep on the waitlist, admit or ding so I guess it will move around some after each round.

thanks trojan and red_s4.

150 in R1 sounds about right, assuming 50% yield like past years. If they do 150 per round, they get 75 matriculating, with R4 being very limited in admissions, that's about right. R1 + R2 will give 150 students, R3 probably gives 50-75 students, while R4 rounds out the rest.

With 110 on the waitlist, assuming 30% comes off this year, that's roughly 40 students for R1. I'm suspecting that R3 and R4 numbers will be very low, to allow some R1 and R2 W/L to get in.

As for the interview, just relax. The questions are pretty much, "Why MBA, Why Berkeley, Why Now", and things like "Why did you choose to do this job?" "Why did you transition to that job?" "What is your leadership style?" "How did you deal with a difficult situation?" "What are times you failed, what did you learn from it?" "What will you do to contribute to Haas?" "What are some ideas for your short and long term goals?"

Just know your story well and you should do fine. Relax, smile, be friendly, don't fidget.

Good luck trojan!

Yeah I agree 150 is what I expected to be admitted during R1. I was just surprised that 110 were placed on the waitlist from just one round, but maybe R1 always has a high number of people placed on the waitlist versus the other rounds.

makes sense, since after R1, everyone else can be compared to the R1 admits and W/L, so they can make a better determination on who is qualified to make it or not.

Hey guys!

Today I got my admit package. The Student Resource Guide is not as cool as the one from Ross (I dont know about the content but the look and feel of it). But there is one thing that really moved me:

Pete Johnson placed a handwritten "congratulations!" in my native language underneath his signature in the congrats-letter.
Damn you Pete! Now it will be even harder to make a balanced decision. Aargh, those things ALWAYS get to me. That's the attention to detail and the individual that I was hoping for in a small program. A very nice gesture, I think.

Now if you would just spread some scholarship love, I will send in that acceptance fax in no time.

Hahaha, yes, Pete did take the time to do those extra handwritten notes to each of the admit, it seems.

If you really want to go to Haas (which it sounds like you do), I would really try to explicitly (but politely) ask for a matching scholarship or some $$of some kind, since if they say no, you still have Ross and the$$.

So. Berkeley really really takes its time reviewing apps. Y'all keep saying this. I do listen. And yet.

Ahh...just found out that the private loans for Berkeley only allow to borrow up to the amount of tuition if you dont have an American co-signer. Ah just great.

Another plus for Ross here. You can borrow at great rates up to full amount of attendance minus aid received. So Haas has just moved down a little again in my personal ranking.

BTW, sorry for my ignorance, but why don't international students get loans through their own home country?

Interesting that Ross offers a better loan package. Then again, Ross does charge 7K more for out of state tuition and 11K more for in state... that probably helps.

Because funding an MBA is not a usual process where I am from. I called up several banks, the concept of handing out six figures without a backup is not easy to grasp for them (risk averse country I am from ). I have about one or two options for loans here, and I have to apply for those. I only get those if the people there think I will be successful in the future. And the terms are not really good.

ahh, good to know.

I think in light of this, you really have nothing to lose to just call up Haas and say, "Look, I really want to go to Haas, but the financial hurdles are so great (no loans for living expenses, no scholarship) that Ross is becoming a stronger choice every day, is there something you can do to help me with this?"

Of course, don't ask it like that, but something to that tune will definitely let you know whether Haas really wants to get you over or if they're firm on their scholarships.

Moreover, for someone like me, i have been out of my home country for almost 5 years, so unlikely to get a loan, and the current country im living in... well lets just say, a lot of foreigners find it difficult to get a secured loan or credit card here!!!

and also what Branson said is true. Most countries are not MBA mad like the USA . The GMAT stats speaks for themselves... 180k examinations last year (or was it the year before?) just over 100k were in the USA. The UK (my home country) barely registered 5k. Japan barely registered 3k. That shows the importance of the MBA in those developed countries.

Got an email today stating the below:
" Since it takes a month for our staff to set-up the physical application files, and since the Admissions Committee is currently reviewing the files of Round Two applicants, we will not begin reading Round Three applications until late February. We expect that our first interview invitations will be extended in mid-March, and we will continue to extend interview invitations through late April.

Also, please note that you should not be discouraged if you do not receive an interview invitation by our Round Three notification deadline of April 30. Some Round Three applicants will be offered a place on the waitlist without having been interviewed; such waitlisted candidates are welcome to schedule an interview in May. "

Now the wait begins...

Haas R1 stats make an interesting reading. Lots of waitlist without interview which is kinda similar to Stern. I suppose Haas is another school that really likes to see "fit" ?

Quick question for those who have submitted their info for the Kroll process - what's supposed to happen after you submit it? Should I be contacted by Berkeley/Kroll? I submitted electronically last Thursday (7th), and haven't gotten anything back from anyone.

I know I'm being nutty worrying about this, but there was an inaccuracy in Kroll's info (they split each of the projects I worked at in my consulting firm into separate 'jobs'). I sent a quick clarification email to Haas about it when I saw it, but am still a little uneasy.
