faceman.. congrats... i was wondering if you can help me out since you've been through it already.. i have my interview on feb 6th... i was wondering what kind of questions they will be asking and what the whole experience is like.. also.. how should i prepare for it... your insights would be greatly appreciate it...

for those that are wondering... here are my stats... 710 gmat.. 3 yrs we.. 3.51 gpa at a state university... asian american.. app went under review on 11/16... interview invite on 1/22...

Congrats on getting an interview! NYU is the only school that I interviewed with where the interviewer had actually read my application. My overall experience was a pleasant one (but I'm sure this varies by interviewer). The best advice I can give is just to make sure you review your essays/application before you go in there because he/she will be asking you questions based on that - usually to further explain something that you've written. It's a little difficult to prepare for these questions, but if you know your application, then the answers will come naturally to you. Also, I've heard other people were asked to give very short elevator pitches to the adcom. I didn't have this experience, but one question I did get was, "What angle will you use with potential employers to get the job that you are aiming for?" Anyway, the interview was only 30 minutes and went by very quickly. I gave what I thought was an idiotic response to one question because I couldn't think of a good answer (it was about a hobby of mine), but I was able rectify that quickly. I don't think my interviewer cared though - she was very friendly and really just seemed to want to get to know me.

Also, think about what size T-shirt you want, because they give you one when you get to the office! 8-)

Cool.. thanks for the info.. after reading your thoughts and experience, i have a few more questions.. :-D do they ask a lot of questions about your job? i actually left my job back in september and have been teaching english in my motherland.. you mentioned short elevator pitch.. about what??? and, how did you answer the question, "What angle will you use with potential employers to get the job that you are aiming for?".. do you know the acceptance rate for interviewers?? thanks for your help!!!!

What 3underscore said is what I've heard as well. They really didn't spend much time asking me about my current job since they have already read the essays and seemed to know my story very well.

When I visited NYU, I heard Isser Gallogly say that acceptance rate for interviewed candidates is about 60-70%.
He said that if you are invited for an interview, the signs are VERY good.
At that point, you have to screw up somehow to not get accepted.

Sorry to hear about that ... I know Stern ding hurts some more for all the extra effort we put into essay3 and international transripts ...
Good luck for the rest ..

That is very true. Stern was the only school to have asked for an original transcript as part of the initial application itself, and getting that was pretty painful from India. Essay 3 and all the effort that goes behind is well acknowledged anyways. Moreover, Stern is one of the few schools which specifically ask what kind of effort did we make to learn more about the school, and if you are in the US, in turn implies that you have to visit the school.
The other reason I am feeling very low right now is because I was considering Stern as a relatively 'safe' school and being dinged without an interview sends very wrong signals. I am still trying to be optimistic and the next few weeks will be key...

gmat_march, really scary post. It sounds like you have a very strong profile and enough to separate yourself from the notorious Indian IT demographic. Sorry to hear that you went through so much trouble with the transcripts to end up with the dreaded ding. Keep your head up though and hopefully something will work out. Where else did you apply?

Ooops ... I cam across a bit wrong .. I have apped. in Stern R2, I was ousting my frustration over my Columbia ding way early in the season ... vchhaochharia's post reminded me of that.
I am waitlisted at Cornell, was dinged at Ross & Columbia, and have app'ed to Duke & Stern in R2.

Heads up vchhaochharia - I've had 2 dings without interview. The second one is considerably easier to digest :( There is no such thing as a "safe" school anymore. What are the other schools that youve applied to ?

My fault gmat_march. I misread your post. Any idea when interview invites start being released for R2 Stern applicants?

Thank you for applying to NYU Stern. You will receive an email from NYU Stern MBA Admissions within the next 7 - 10 business days confirming the receipt of your application and providing you with a password to our secure Application Status Check website. Please note that application receipts will not be emailed prior to the application deadline. This site will allow you to monitor the status of your application throughout the admissions process. This site is available 24 hours a day and reflects the current status of your application. You will be notified via email when your status has been updated. The site is continuously updated, but it may take up to 10 business days for information to be posted once we receive it, including your supplemental materials.

This is the confirmation mail that I got after submitting my application. It has been 12 business days but I still have not received the password for the status check. Anyone else got it?

It took 17 days for the status change in my case. So, don't worry about it.

Man NYU has some slack ad-com. Its been 3 weeks now and some people haven't even received a "complete" status, with their username and password. Chicago's been sending out interview decisions in 20 days....
