Cornell Tech MBA FAQ
Can I apply to the Cornell Tech MBA and another one of Johnson’s residential MBA programs, e.g., the One-Year MBA in Ithaca or Two-Year MBA program?
No. You must select the program that meets your educational and professional goals. To be a successful candidate for the Cornell Tech MBA, you will clearly identify how you match with the digital economy oriented mission of the campus.
Can I simultaneously apply to both the M.Eng. in Computer Science and MBA program at Cornell Tech?
No. It is important that you identify whether you are seeking to advance in a technically driven or in a business-oriented function. Either way, you benefit from learning in this shared environment.
How can I know if I meet the prerequisite standards for Cornell Tech?
Cornell Tech is founded on the mission to link entrepreneurs and the new digital economy within the tech ecosystem of New York City. You must show a demonstrated passion for this mission through your previous academic and/or professional experience.
What should I do if I have demonstrative experience but didn’t take courses or major in a technical field?
We value work experience and realize that you may have gained experience in prerequisite subjects outside of the classroom. In that case, you should outline and demonstrate your experience in your résumé and/or professional profile. If you don’t have demonstrative experience, you should have an undergraduate degree in engineering, computer science, mathematics, or a related technical field.
Will you accept GRE and GMAT scores that are five years old?
Your GRE and GMAT scores must be valid on the day that you submit your application. GRE and GMAT scores are only valid for five years.
Is the degree offered at Cornell Tech the same degree earned in Ithaca, NY?
Yes. Graduates from Johnson’s five MBA programs earn a Master of Business Administration from Cornell University, but the focus, requirements, and location of the programs are different. Cornell Tech students experience a mix of technical material, business know-how, and practical engagement with companies and nonprofits.
Does Cornell Tech have housing available for students?
Housing options are still being negotiated for the summer semester in Ithaca, NY.
A limited number of furnished multi-bedroom apartments are available for students to share in New York City. These apartments are leased to Cornell and students are charged by Cornell. We do not have family housing available at this time (e.g., spouses or domestic partners). You are expected to arrange your own living accommodations.
What is the total cost of attendance for the Cornell Tech MBA?
The total cost of attendance for the 2014-2015 academic year is yet to be determined. Please anticipate a total tuition cost similar to our One-Year MBA offered in Ithaca, NY. Students should anticipate annual increases in tuition and fees. Although we make every effort to inform students of changes in advance, the amount, time, and manner of payment of tuition, fees, or other charges may be changed at any time without notice. Average tuition increase per academic year is 3-5%.
Are scholarships and financial aid available?
Superior MBA candidates will be considered for substantial scholarship at the time of their applications. Federal and private loans may be available for qualified candidates. For more information on loans, please visit Johnson’s Office of Financial Aid.
Will my ability to finance my studies impact my chances of admission?
Our admissions process is blind to your financial circumstances. As noted in the Tuition and Fees section, it is your responsibility to secure the needed financial resources.
Can I visit the campus when I’m in New York City?
Yes. In fact, we encourage it. Please email admissions@tech.cornell.edu to arrange a visit. We’ll be happy to show you around and we will do our best to have you sit in on a class if you’re interested.
Can I visit the Ithaca campus if I am applying for the Cornell Tech MBA?
Yes. You can schedule a visit that includes sitting in on a class, a tour of Sage Hall, and an information session with current students (lunch provided). We strongly encourage visitors on Thursdays so you can also experience the network at Johnson for one of our weekly Sage Socials. Please see our calendar for more details: https://www.johnson.cornell.edu/Full-Ti ... Visit.aspx
Where can I meet Johnson admissions officers for more information?
Our admissions team travels the world to meet with new candidates for our residential MBA programs. Please visit https://www.johnson.cornell.edu and select the “Attend an Admissions Event” button.
Could the program be done in a low-residency format so I wouldn’t have to relocate?
No. The Cornell Tech MBA is intensive and designed to be completed in one academic year on a full-time, residential basis.
What are my chances of being accepted?
Successful candidates will be technically adept, innovative, creative, cutting-edge individuals ready to act on and explore robust ideas that will test their passions. The Cornell Tech MBA is the intersection of business and the digital economy; admitted students will demonstrate their potential to leverage this intersection for advancements in organizational innovation.
Do you expect that most students will have Cornell undergraduate degrees?
No. Cornell explicitly intends for this program to be diverse and balanced. Our admissions process is designed to select students based on proven talent and degree of match with the unique mission and vision of Cornell Tech.
Is prior work experience required to apply?
Yes. It is imperative that you demonstrate your professional experience and readiness. The perfect blend of technical know-how and business acumen is essential for the next generation of entrepreneurs and business leaders. If you do not have prior work experience but still can demonstrate your fit within the Cornell Tech mission, please contact our Program Manager, Jenna Abbott, at jma266@cornell.edu.
Can I submit my application first and send supplemental documents later?
No. All materials including your “creativity” should be uploaded directly to the application. An application is not considered submitted until the application fee has been paid. Only submitted applications will begin the review process.
How will I be notified of the admissions committee’s decision?
Admissions are handled directly through our Admissions office in Ithaca, NY. You will be notified of their decision via email and the online portal.
My application to the Cornell Tech MBA was rejected. Can I re-apply?
If you are refused admission or you declined a previous offer, you may re-apply in the future through the online application. You should plan to submit new supporting materials to be considered for admission. Feel free to contact Jenna Abbott at jma266@cornell.edu for tips on how you can improve your application.
I was accepted into the program but I would like to defer my admission to another year. Is this possible?
Deferrals are considered on a case-by-case basis and reviewed by the admissions committee. Typically, deferrals are only granted if you are pursuing an opportunity that would significantly enhance your experience when you do matriculate. If your request for deferral is denied, you will need to reapply to be considered in the future.

The wait gets longer..ahhh!
Rohit, did you happen to get any further information / updates. I'm planning to apply for the Feb round - wondering if you could share your experiences. Going by the deadline on their website, the first round of interviews would have taken place by now ?

I know that some Dec applicants have had their first round interviews and awaiting second round invites. In my case, its still under review. So its still a wait and watch game.

Sure PM me.
I haven't heard back yet. I think they have to deal with a lot of applications considering the same team reviews both Johnson school and the other programs.

As much as I would love to tell you I made it, I haven't
This is the only school I applied to, so I may not be able to compare it with any other admissions process, but from what I have read, this is much simpler in terms of complexity. But the competition itself for seats I think is right up there with the best of schools. Open ended essays, a resume, linkedin profile (optional), and a creativity submission are your main components.
The cornell tech website is a great resource for the program, along with youtube videos about the curriculum and entrepreneurial focus of the program.
I wasn't interviewed so won't be able to give you many insights on that front.
The class size is relatively small at 40 students approx. for this year, although this is a space constraint based on campus size. Once the new building is finished on Roosevelt Island, they should be able to accommodate many more seats. From the students I have had interactions with, they range from designers, entrepreneurs, product management, data science backgrounds.
